Failing ECM?

I have been having problems the past few days. The engine sounds like it is loading up with fuel sputters a few seconds then starts top run right after you begin to get speed up. Service engine soon light comes on intermitently. We tried to hook up to a snapon analizer and it states no conection. The friend with the scanner suggested the ECM might be failing.
The car is a 94 Z28 Conv. M-6. Could this be the problem? What is the best way to fix? Should I buy a new stock computer or modded? If so where is best? I wouldn't mind mo HP's but I don't want to loose to much in fuel milage. Thanks; jmack

I'd get the code read before purchasing anything. Not familiar with that scanner - you mean it wouldn't communicate with the car through the DLC port under the dash? If it's supposed to work with a '94 I'd check for power at the port, if none then check the fuse that supplies power to it.
