Examined a Hypertech chip from a 93Z, results within.

I obviously won't post exact settings, due to their 'proprietary' nature ... and my unwillingness to be sued. Nor will I send anyone the ROM dump, so don't bother asking.

The ROM was compared and examined with TunerCat RT 1.12

Before I posted this, I checked to see if anyone else had posted on this... but didnt see any. If this is old news, I apologize.

I met a guy a couple weeks ago with a 93Z (I also have a 93Z) and he stated one of his mods was a Hypertech chip. He said he'd had it a year (including their thermostat to go along with it). I asked him if he'd mind coming over and let me read out the chip... and he agree'd because he wanted to see 'what was different' as well.

Well he finally came over today, and the following were different from my dump of my stock 93 memcal:

Total, 143 bytes different... hmm.. not much changed I immediatly deducted.

1.) Speedlimiter removed
2.) Revlimiter was set to 72xx rpm (whats the deal with that?) obviously the 4L60 wont allow that... but interesting none-the-less.
3.) Cooling fans lowered a tad
4.) TCC unlock/lock lowered 8mph or so.
5.) They played with the TPS % TCC lock/unlock happens

Otherwise a stock ROM!

Their website claims fuel/timing changes, and the literature that he brought over (he had the orignal box it all came in) said the same. It also insisted on the user of said ROM to use 93 octane only from then on. Also on their website it says that it depends on what vehicle get what mods on the ROM... however as I said the paper that came with his has fuel/timing changes bulleted and the need for hightest gas.

Anyway... I was a bit suprised, and so was he.

I was just curious what my peers thought about the findings.

Thats a good deal for what one has to pay for one of them HyperCrap chips No, it really doesn't surprise me what one would get from them in a generic chip. I have read several of them and found the same results. Even JET has the same crap that they pedal to people as so called custom tuned chips. I read one chip that was suposed be a custom tune for a blown C4 L98 corvette and all they did was bump the timing up two degrees across the map and charge my friend $450! He was very p****d off I can tell you that.

I know a guy whose looked at the Hypertech .bin file before and come to the same conclusions. It's a rip off if you ask most of us.

I wonder if Hypertech's stage III Powermaster was any different. They discontinued it and left the stage II Thermomaster as the top of the line chip.

Doesn't suprise me a bit. I've found the same thing on 2 different Hypertech chips that were supposed to be "custom" for 2 different cars.
I've even got a copy of TPIS chip that was exactly the same as a Hypertech chip.

I've been told by more than one tuner that GM did an excellent job tuning these cars with the stock items in place. There is no room to make any improvements over what GM has already in place.. That said, unless you are adding mods to the car, you won't gain anything from any reprogram, and if you do add mods, you will need something custom, not a hypertech chip/programmer..

Tell that to the plethora of tuners who have made marked improvements on an otherwise stock car. GM got it close, but they run their cars fat. Leaning them out helps to bring the power up.

That couldn't be farther from the truth. They can handle way different timing and fuel tables. The reason is that GM designed the car to run from colorado to florida from 87-93 fuel.

A Yugo can pickup power with a proper tune. The proof that GM runs these cars fat are all the people who pickup 8-10whp just by putting a pressure regulator on these cars and goto 35-36psi! When I dyno'd my car originally it was particularly fat in the low-mid.

Thanks for the replys guys, I didn't know exactly what to expect. I'm not down on the 'chip' industry at all... however anyone considering this 'mod' would be better served by spending their $170.00 on something a little less 'universal'.
