EPROM Programmers and eraser.. which one works?
The Atmel AT29C256 is $5.00 if you can find out which ECM is in your 2.8 V6 I can determine what prom that takes. If its just an old 27C128 I have pulled chips for $2.00. I check them, meaning that I erase them and make sure that they will take a program then erase them again. These "pulled" proms are usually chips removed from PC mother boards or other electronics. The Atmel chips are brand new.
No eraser needed with the Atmel chip. You do need the adapter board that is it. If you purchase a Intronics Pocket Programmer 2 it does support the Atmel chips and it erases in about 2 seconds.
To load a program with the PP2, first thing you do when you get the PP2 is to load the software that comes with it. Once loaded, start the software up, then click on the device tab and choose the correct device from a list. Do this before inserting the chip into the programmer otherwise you can damage it.
The PP2 is software driven, meaning that when you choose the device it chooses the correct voltages that is applied to the chip. So if you plug in the chip before you start up the software one can damage the chip.
Once you have a valid bin that you want to program the prom with, you will click on "load buffer" that will prompt you to go to the file you want loaded into the buffer from wherever you have it stored on your HD. Once loaded into the buffer and with the chip in the PP2 you click on "erase" that will erase the chip. Next click on "program" that will program the chip and then you are done and ready to try out your newly programmed prom.
Thats basically about all there is to it. Of course you do have to modify your original BIN file from the car in TunerCat before you do any of the above.
