Is it that easy ?

i just read the instructions on how to do the vats bypass on shoebox . is it really as easy as splicing a resistor into the 2 white wires ?

the resistance on my key is 949 ohms so what resistor do i buy ?

For the most part you have to mix and match resistors to add up to the value, so I'd just buy the right resistors to add up do that amount, and go from there. I just read on shoebox's site about the passkey values and you seem to hit right between two values, so buy enough resistors to add up to the value directly above and below yours.

No, it all just a big scam.

When you read your key with a meter, cross the leads and see what the meter reads, first. There may be some resistance in the leads, themselves. If the reading is zero (ideal), your good to go. If not, you need to subtract whatever resistance you read from the leads from the resistance that you measure. Also make sure you get good, solid contact on the key with your meter leads. A casual connection can skew the reading.

Based on the scale, I would bet you are closer to the pellet 4 value.

Just pasing through...

I'm looking for info on programming a scanner in VB.Net and noticed this thread. I am an ASE technician with over 18 years - mostly drivability and electrical for the past 10 or so. I thought this might help...

Pass Key Resistance Values

Key Resistance Number.....................Ohms Value
--------------------------------------------------
.............1............................... 402
.............2............................... 523
.............3............................... 681
.............4............................... 887
.............5............................... 1130
.............6............................... 1407
.............7............................... 1870
.............8............................... 2370
.............9............................... 3010
.............10.............................. 3740
.............11.............................. 4750
.............12.............................. 6040
.............13.............................. 7500
.............14.............................. 9530
.............15.............................. 11800

Yes, the resistor trick works great!

Edited for readability - forum didn't like my tables spaces
