Do LS1 cars have a "black box"

I've heard people say different things that the PCM does on these cars. I've heard that GM has started to equip their late model cars with "black boxes" that record things like speed, throttle position, ABS engaugment, etc. that could be used to investigate an accident. Just wondering if my car would snitch on me or not.

the airbag module in your car stores data up to a couple sec. before an accident where the airbags go off, this is special encrypted data only a select few can gather and read from the module

The box you're referring to is located under the F-body's center console.

That thing under the console said it had something to do with the air bags, I didn't think it would be the "black box" but I guess it is.

that's it. While it constantly monitors the data, the only time it is actually written is in the event of an air bag deployment or a near airbag deployment. (more then x% brake force applied while going over x miles per hour, etc)

GM calls it the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM). It contains an energy reserve to deploy the airbags for up to ten seconds after power is lost under certain conditions. If you don't care about the airbags, I suppose one could disable SIR and remove the SDM. I don't know how you would turn off the AIRBAG light on your cluster, though.

I'll live with it. I rather like my air bags, along with my life.

either get airbag dummy module or like me, just take the cluster and break the circuit that goes to the light and use a magic pen to by pass the light, because everyone could use 17lb off the front which is what the passenger side assembly weighs, wanna keep the passenger side working, buy a dummy module for the pass side, I heard of those.

The only way I'd even consider getting rid of the air bags is if I had a full roll cage installed, with racing seats, and a 5 point harness installed(I guess a 5 point is the one with two shoulder straps, a waist strap, and a dick strap).

Re: Do LS1 cars have a "black box"

arron ,yes you do have a black box,im a reconstructionist for my job and w/o checking the list,i beleive you have the older sytle that only records certain data for engineering purposes.most gms built after 1999 had the modules which record speed 5 seconds prior to a crash.yes it can and would be used as evidence against or for you .ive used it several times.it dont really tell braking other than whether or not hte brake circuit was activated, meaning if your foot was on the pedal enough to turn the bRAKE lights on.the throttle reading works off your tps.,and it gives engine rpms also.if you really need to know which module you have,i beleive you can find it on the manufactors website, its called vetronix, they make they modules.but any gm from 96 up with airbags have a box,but mostly 2000 and newer have the good box.btw good choice dont fricking remove any part of your airbag system...for what,to save a lousy 17 pounds?id rather save my 195 lbs of flesh..and a roll cage wont really help you in a type of crash that youd need an air bag for.....just keep them, besides its against federal law for anyone to tamper or disable an airbag system

Well according to the news here in OK. About a month ago a guy bought a 2000 TA and the very next day crashed it and killed the passanger. They are tring to use the black box against him. According to the black box he was doing 120 MPH
5 sec before the crash, hit the brakes twice and crashed at 85 MPH.
