diy cable

Has anyone made their own cable then ran some type of software? I personally think that the amount of $$ people want for a cable is crazy. I'd like to make my own cable if anyone knows pin outs or any info on it let me know. Thanks

Re: diy cable

Your best bet is just forking over the cash. If you are comfortable with soldering then you can buy the kit and make it yourself... saves you $20. From what I understand, the reason its so expensive for 94 fbods is because your only choice for the ALDL end of the cable is the high dollar molded connector where 95-97 fbods have the choice of getting the cheaper version. I suppose you could order the $65 cable with the OBD2 connector, back the pins/wires out of the connector and just plug the wires into your ALDL connector where they are supposed to go. Youd just have to be extremely careful not the pull one of the wires out out.. too risky for me, personally.

I built my own and have used it with tunercat for a couple of years. I'll see if I can find the schematic tonight. There are some schematics on the web - mine is just a variant on one of those.

Here it is. Use at your own risk.

Also, if there's anything in this schematic which you don't understand, then I suggest you buy a premade cable.

Re: diy cable

I made one similar to the one posted above but I used the max-232ecpe chip, the max233 is much easier to make, mine works fine and is hardwired into my car and I have a 9 pin serial cable that pulls out under the radio, looks pretty sweet. You can doa google search and there is about 4 different wire diagrams out there including a very simple three transistor route. I suggest doing it yourself, I was very easy and about 28 bucks and looks much cleaner than the akm adapter+adapter+adapter+adapter.
