car not starting (Ignition key sensor??)

I need some advice on this please. last evening my car wouldnt start. The radio, electric window, lights, battery etc is all fine. Even jump starting didnt help. Checked the starters and wires under the body all seems fine according to the garage guy. He says that at last it may have to do with the ignition key which has a sensor on it, and that it has malfunctioned because I may have dropped it or something. So the antitheft system doesnt recognize the key and won't start.

The dealer says he can issue a new key, but before I buy that, I need to know for sure if it actually is the key. How do I know for sure that the problem lies with the key? Check trouble codes? (costing money again), Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The security light would be on in the gauge cluster if it was the key(vats).

You mean when the ignition key is turned on once? or does the security light show regardless of putting the key in the ignition?

Cos when I turn the ignition the quite a few lights come on such as the engine light & the security light as well. Is that the clue?
In fact i've just given in the car to the dealer (rip-offs!) and expect a call from them tomorrow. My mechanic has more or less told me what it is but he has no computer to show codes to be sure. In order to avoid all kinds of costly diagnostics or disassembling etc, i told dealer to only check the trouble codes (at which the guy frowned). And I don't know what else to say to them to avoid paying a lot of money.
Thanx.
