If your buddy uploaded the program for you then you should be able to edit it on your own once you get the tuning software.

Now if the tune was uploaded by Ed he more than likely locked the file. Ed does this to prevent his work from being used without his permission.

You shouldn't have a problem editing the file.

If you know how the car works, they both do the same thing. I prefer Tunercat, in large part because of the price, and to me it just looks better. Plus obviously Tunercat is not VIN locked, although that is not an issue for many people.

I am not aware of any Ed Wright Hotcam files floating around for 383 cars, but I could be wrong, timing is different for a stroker.

I have tunercat. I like it for all the same reasons that doc said.
I'm still learning but getting better with it.
Its not as "GUI" as LT1edit but for the money difference I really don't care.

Look down the page for some links to .bin and .lt1 files.

383 and 355 timing is not going to be the same. Ed does lock down some of his programs, hopefully you didn't just lock up the computer.

Am I right when I say that Ed Wright didn't do the tuning?
Your buddy did.

I would advice you to use the E.W. tune to study and learn from because all cars are going to respond differently to a particular tune.
The good thing is that you can get a general direction to follow and it will help you get yours tuned with a lot less Trial and error.

If the cubes and heads/cam are similar then the timing SHOULD be pretty darn close, and that is a + to using a baseline tune. Just play it safe, especially with WOT since AF could be way off, or timing could be as well, but in general the timing should be close and you can figure that out slowly on the street.

Tuner Cat is the way to go price wise and there are some tables that are accessible in TC that are not accessible in Edit. Price wise TC is the way to go as it allow for unlimited use for programming unlimited numbers of PCMs and ECMs for other applications. LT1 Edit is a good product but is locked to one PCM. Some say Edit has a more user friendly interface but I personally find TC easier to use. One thing taht Edit does that TC will not is when making a gear ratio change for example going from 3.42 to 4.10 axle gears.

Edit will automatically make all the necessary edits to the shift tables. TC will not do that. I have found that when making that change in TC the car will not shift properly after the gear change. Edit makes around 600 table entries automatically in all the shift tables when making a rear axle ratio change. I use Edit when I need to make a gear change for anyone needing it, for all other operations I use TC.

For either set of software you will need a programming cable which is available from Andy at:

If you have a locked Ed Wright programmed PCM you can open it with TC, you can read it and look at the tables but because he locks it you won't be able to reflash your PCM with that file if you try to edit it. But if you send me the file I can usually find his locks and repair it so it can be read and edited again. I have fixed several of them, as long as it is a 84/95 F or Y body I can most likely fix it.

It sounds like your asking advice on stealing software, you and your buddy should figure that out between yourselves.

You are better off purchasing the software be it TC or Edit. One thing is that if you purchase it there is support from both and support is good with both products if you have a problem.

Plus TC is has a authorization code so even if he gives you a disk the software may not work correctly and you can take a chance of corruption which will cause you more headaches than $90 for software that is licensed.

Just a bit of adivice.
