cable questions

Hey I was wondering about the akm cables and all these diodes and chips and voltage regulator they have on their site to make your own cable......I borrowed a buddies and its a 95 OBDI with OBDII style connector. Its very simple and is just a serial to OBDII connector with some wire, no rs232 adapter or chips or any of that stuff? what gives? I want to make one specifically to fit my gm1 connector like his and I have the hypertech connector. Where can I find the info about what pins to connect to on the serial (laptop) side? His has 3 wires, but my USB style (that didnt work so well) only had 2 wires. Any info would be appreciated.

AFAIK, there has to be some circuitry. It won't work just directly connected to so and so pins.

ahh, you are correct, i opened the serial side and the board is in there. Ok, so my question is, I want to try his cable on my car. I have GM1 connector. I notice my USB cable (supposed to be akm) only had 2 wires on the aldl side. His has power, ground , and data. Do I need to connect the power, and where would I connect it to (any batt. power)? My USB style cable read the PCM to 50% and dropped connection, so this is why I want to try his serial cable. Basically, can I use his cable and just put the pins in the correct locations on my aldl? the big question is the power ternminal, does it need to be connected on a 94?

There is not a 12v terminal in the 12 pin DLC. Try it without it and see if it works. If not, use the lighter socket or some other source to get 12v for that wire.

do I need driver software for the serial cable like the USB cable? if not do I need to change settings in tunercat or something?

ok so i tried the serial cable and got the same results......I go to read the PCM with tunercat and it always gets to 50% everytime with either cable and then I get a communication error?? strange. One thing I should mention is that this car was a '93 with speed density b4 I converted it with a 95 eng./harness. I made the correct splices and moved wires around under the dash to accomodate the change in harnesses from one year to the other. This car runs, drives, everything seems to work except abs. I can hook a scan tool to the car and it works fine to read data and codes. I dont know if it might be an issue with my laptop or something else in the harness? If it always drops comm. at 50% im led to believe its something with the PCM block its trying to read. Any suggestions? Tomorrow im going to try using my other car and a different laptop to try to narrow down my dilema. I also have another PCM I could try reading in the current car. Any knowledgeable input would be appreciated.

If anyone cares, just thought Id share the outcome. It had nothing to do with anything I was doing or my setup. Turns out the read errors were cause by a bug in the version of tunercat that I had. Go figure. Downloaded the new version and it read the PCM and prgrammed it with the AKM USB cable. Oh well, at laest I didnt fry any PCM's. Now I need to learn what to change and where to achieve a better tune.

ive got a base tune for the heads/cam and other mods. It need fine tuning and trans. tuning because I asked them to leave the trans default. The trans. is not a worry for me, Ive got that covered. The engine tune needs some touching up and ive bought a wideband since im going to be spraying as well. Ive done quite a bit of reading, but haven't decided how to tackle this and where to start exactly. I know I need to see which cells im running lean/rich and adjust accordingly. But where to start making corrections?.Guess I should start another thread since this no longer pertains to this one.

Might help someone else that finds this thread if you tell what version had trouble and what version you switched to that didn't.
