Best bet.

I got myself a new laptop now and I really want to start doing all the tuning on my car. I'm new to the whole tuning scene so I am just curious what programs are the best to use and what I need. Where do I get an ALDL cable? Programs? Anything else I need? Are there programs that are compatible with Windows Vista? Thanks for any help!

Did you search first? Seems like this question is asked on almost a daily basis.

Check Ebay for them. I got the cable and a disc with 10 programs. They are for datalogging and little else. Be careful not to just start changing things until you do your homework. I have read a few post on bad experiences.

So why not make a FAQ sticky?

Dude, it is all you!!!

Probably within a few months of programming and doing searches on this site you should have the knowledge to present one where we can start adding.

I just have never wanted to do it. I did the "other" sticky.

That would be great if I knew where to start lol. I would be more than happy to once I get the hang of it. Im looking at LT1 edit. It looks a lot more user friendly than tunercats. Any disadvantages to running LT1 edit?

I can't make stickies. Plus, I think they are the scourge of the earth and clog up the forum.

i think an FAQ on the basics would be very helpful. I just got a datacable and ive probably done 50 searches for basic things in the past week.

Well I am in the market for datalogging software and my hang up is finding one that I like or is user friendly and works with Windows Vista.

AFAIK, LT1_edit is not a datalogger. It is a programmer.

I know that question has been asked before.

I prefer Datamaster to anything I've logged with before. I don't run Vista, though. I run Win98 on my logging/tuning laptop.

This may sound dumb and just may be a dumb question. So would I want to have DataMaster AND a program like LT1 edit or Tunercats to program any changes I want to make? Thanks for all the help so far guys. Appreciate it.
