Bench testing PCM

Is there any way to test a PCM out of the vehicle?

Here is my situation and the reason reason I ask. For background, my engine builder/tuner installed an OBDI when he did the 383, but I have been running my OBDII PCM since I only have a scanner for my OBDII and I like to monitor what is going on.

I began having a variety of drivability problems with my Camaro last fall.
I experienced intermittent and mutli DTCs and blown fuses. After months of off and on attempts at trouble shooting these problems myself, I eventually discovered that the wire harness nearest the pass side headers had apparently has been shorting out intermittently. I repaired the burned wire/short, but wonder if the OBDII PCM is o.k. In the midst of all this, I installed the OBDI pcm and have been running it with no problems/DTCs.

Yes, I know I could simply reinstall the OBDII PCM and test it but wanted to know if bench testing is possible. Do dealerships have equipement to bench test a PCM? I don't want to take my pristine Camaro out in the ice, snow and salt if i can do, or have done, a simple test.

Im sure it's doable. I guess, people like Ed Wright load tunes out of the car. You would almost need a complete harness and sensors, or you would be getting DTC's for all the sensors. As far as ease, If your not going to drive it until the weather gets nice, Id just wait till then. Or send it out to Ed Wright at Fastchip.

Check AKM cables. They made a bench harness at one time.

If anyone knows where to buy some of the PCM connectors outside of taking them off a wiring harness, that would be a bonus. I found some of them in the Packard catalog, but that doesn't mean anyone sells them retail.

Andrew does have some instructions on how to build a basic programming harness - http://www.akmcables.com/techinfo.htm

I don't think he sold them, though.

I believe dealers can do it if they have the right setup. They do make a unit to do it with.

I think your best bet would be just going to a pull-a-part junkyard in your area and cutting them off the wiring harness. That would probably be the cheapest route.

Yeah, that is true and I might just go that route myself. The guy on that posted website has a lot of handy connectors though.
