Beginner problems with LT1 Edit

I am trying to read my PCM for the first time using LT1 Edit and for whatever reason the program cannot connect with the PCM. There is also a message on the screen that there is a READ-ONLY cable installed, and NOT to try to program the PCM. I bought the software and PCM used, so Idon't know if I'm doing something wrong or not. Could it be that my laptop doesn't have a serial port and I had to buy a serial-to-USB adapter? I have heard that some adapters won't work. The adapter works flawlessly with Autotap, but could it not work with LT1 Edit? Any suggestions, guys?

Thanks!

The cable hardware is locked to the vin of the original pcm the LT1_edit was bought for. You need to contact carputing.com and have them add your vin to the license.

what kind of cable? also i dont like usb to serial adapters for programming a pcm knowing windows and drivers. Too risky. I would get a serial port for you laptop. Your need a port replicator. You can either plug into a special port on your laptop depending on the brand of laptop, OR you can buy a usb port replicator. the usb port replicator actually creates real serial ports instead of converting the data bits from serial to usb.

I think it's an IOGEAR, or something like that-got it from Best Buy. Where can I get one of those port replicators? I have a new M505 Gateway laptop. Thanks for the help so far.

i bought mine off ebay. They also have them at compusa, and they should have them at best buy also.

Heres abn example on ebay
Here

Port replicators usually always have a serial port, a paralell port. Look for one with both just to be sure your not getting a usb to serial converter.

Ok, thanks for the example I know what you're talking about now. So will this solve my problem? I take it that the adapter is what's causing my problems? Thanks for all your help!

yes those usb adapters were really made for devices like mice and keyboards and joysticks and crap. Tend to be a pain for things like this.

good luck

Just get a hexidecimal editor and change the VIN number within the program and recompile. Wah-la! At least I think that should work.
