Question ? on Auto X-ray scanner results.

When i plug my Auto X-ray scanner into my 96 Z28, it reads "Ignition Timing Adv." around -20 degrees at idle and on throttle moves up to -46 degrees. When I compare and plug into my friends 97 SS, it doesn't put the - (minus) sign in front of the number of degrees.
Example:
-18 Degrees for the 96 Z28 at idle
18 Degrees for the 97 SS at idle

The engines are identical and both OBD2. Why the difference?
The 97 has a Jet Stage 2 chip if that helps any (doubt it)

It doesn't matter if it has the - or not.
