argh! spark retard and knock counts? (long)

okay, i replaced my AC Delco Platinum Rapidfires with autolite 104's and installed a mallory HY-fire VI CD ignition, and at first i felt like i had a miss. i went and took the wires off and then back on to make sure they were all on, the miss got less noticible afterwards. i logged some time on the datamaster and the knock count went up a little bit almost everytime i accelerated (except at WOT). i went and pulled all the plugs (except #7 since i have to pull the header. i will do it tomorrow) and took the gap to .042" and put them back. then i put my stock program back in (slightly modded for spark retard, egr, rev limit, and fans). i no longer feel a miss, but i logged some driving time today with datamaster and was still seeing spark retard (none above 4k RPM's) and it would pick up some knock once in a while. should i keep driving (after i regap the #7 plug) and get some mileage with the Program i put back in there? i did notice that when i first started driving after loading the program, i was picking up lots of retard and knock (even at idle). then after a little while it got less. it is not constant, just once in a while. if i rev the motor and let it run down, it picks up knock. i also notice that the STerms were going lean about 75% of the time before it would pull spark. what do you all say? i am lost

I don't have an answer for you on you problem, but I did have a similar issue. When I would re-flash my PCM I too would also get extensive retard until it calmed down after a few runs. I would like to hear from others why this might be happening.

well, i believe the reason for lots of knock when it first changes is due to the learning modules having to start form scratch. they have not 'learned' what cell to use to keep the AFR correct. this is just my theory, though.
