what brand serial adaptor are you using

P.S. there is no reason a manaufacturer specific laptop wouldnt work and other would. Dell, Toshiba, Sony, all the UBS ports are the same and the drivers are owned by Microsoft.

Majestron I guess...its pretty cheap...and I installed the drivers and everything and in device manager it shows it as com port 4, so I tried that and nothing ;[. I guess Belkin in the brand to buy..but I don't understand the difference really...unless it has something to do with the drivers.

CHEAP ones WILL NOT work. The cheapest one I Know that works is the KEYSPAN one. I got mine from compusa.com for $40, works great.

In the bios of the machine make sure you enable legecy support on usb. that seems to solve tons of problems on usb to serial

Re: anyone get a stupid dell to work with usb->serial

During POST (power on system test) you will either get a logo screen or how your computer is set up. Processor, memory ect. When that happens you hit a key to get into the BIOS. Usually F1 F2 F10 or Del. Look for device settings and look for USB. 1 of 2 settings usually do it. 1) legecy support for USB or USB mouse. If both are there do both. Aslo i found that plugging my programming cable in AFTER the machine was booted made a big difference, otherwise my computer detected my programming cable as a mouse and never did work.
Hope that helps.
