'95 OBDII problem

I have a '95 with an OBDII. I bought a scantool and plugged it in but it just read that there was an error. I hooked it up to my friends '99 LS-1 which is also an OBDII and the thing worked. I have heard someone call the '95 the bastard year because it is the first year of the OBDII but the same engine and it doesn't belong and has a lot of problems, has anyone else encountered this problem or has anyone heard about this?

I really hate to break the news to you, but the '95 is OBDI with an OBDII style connector. You're not the first one to think it is OBDII.

Yep sounds like an OBDI with and OBDII connector. To be sure check this site out and compare the ones there to the one you have:

They're right, although you have 16 pin connector (like OBDII) it's still a OBDI car. '95 is a perfect year for an fbody, still an easy OBDI (cheaper to tune) and a vented opti.

I was under the understanding that '95 was a switchover year, and that they went from OBDI to OBDII somewhere late in '95 when they were ready, meaning that there were some '95 OBDII cars.

I'm in the same boat. I have a '95 car that I thought was OBDI but am now confused beyond all reason... It's definitely an OBDII connector, but How the hail do you get the codes out of it if there isn't an OBDI scanner with an OBDII connector???

Its definitely a OBD1 computer with a OBD2 connector. There were no OBD2 PCMs in any 1995 car. There were however plenty of OBD2 diagnostic connectors in that year.

OK, now how do I get the codes out of it??? I read through the GM Service manual and the way the connections are mapped in the OBDII style connector, I don't see any way to use a paper clip like you could with the old OBDI connector...
