Would you pay $1500 for......
An 81 z28, 350, auto, t-tops.
It runs good. Interior is a 5 of 10. Exterior is primer gray, but body panels are perfectly straight. No rust.
Paint doesnt bother me, cause i want to repaint whatever car i get anyways.
t-tops are a big plus to me. This car is going to be for me to cruise on the weekends. So the tops will never be on. NEVER
The interior, well i have 4th gen seats, and i could redo carpet, headliner myself.
Just wondering if you think its a good investment. I think for about $5K i could have a great car on my hands.

Hell yeah I would. Even if you don't know if you'll keep it, have a buddy spray a fairly good coat of paint on it and detail the engine a bit. Then if you decide you don't want it, you can probably double your money if not more.

According to the NADA Appraisal guide, low retail for that car is $3575 in your area. "Low Retail" means This vehicle would be in mechanically functional condition, needing only minor reconditioning. The exterior paint, trim, and interior would show normal wear, needing only minor reconditioning. May also be a deteriorated restoration or a very poor amateur restoration. Most usable "as-is". So you'll need to deduct its value somewhat as that is assuming it is a fairly clean "classic-musclecar".

Edmunds however gives it a value much lower than that. Not knowing the vehicle mileage I plugged in 150k miles and got a retail value of $426 and a dealer resale value of $703 for your zip code (78666). This is assumes a base price of $620 ($1157 dealer) for a 81 Z/28 with normal wear, so maybe it deducted too much on the condition.

The actual value is probably somewhere between these two numbers, however if the engine is strong and the body is as clean as you say, $1500 sounds like a good price. If there's a lot of miles on it though, you may need to consider that the engine and tranny will need some attention sooner than later.

I don't put much stock in those value guides like NADA, Edmunds, etc. My 81 VW Rabbit is probably supposed to be worth spit, but I wouldn't sell it for a loogey because it's worth more than that to me.
Bottom line: a car (or any other product or service) is worth what someone is willing to pay, no more no less.
