cost is a relative term in this world. The saying "how fast you want to go depends on how deep your wallet is" explains it all. I think you will be very happy with a well built 383. You need to consider the whole driveline though. It does no good to get a torque-monster motor in front of a trans that won't last down the road, and same thing for the rear. I have an LT1 in my 81 with the T56 and its awesome. I also scavenged the rear out of an 80 turbo T/A with disc brakes and replaced the diff when the spiders finally broke loose.

Get to know what parts interchange with each other and you can save ALOT of money.

davidarel, where is a good reference site for interchanging parts? I just picked up an 80 Camaro with a 383. It has a open diff and I would like to change rear ends to a posi (maybe 3.42 gears).

Thanks,
Chris

Hell na,put a big block in that sucka!

454 bored .060 = 468cu.
Comp Cams Magnum 292 cam (flat tappet)
10.5:1 compression
'781' casting oval port heads
Good headers and you'll be damn near 500HP,very streetable (to me) and idles like a pro stocker.

Thanks,

Get your hands on a trans am rear. The majority of them came with posi and some of them also had disc brakes. Most of the firebird and camaro parts interchange and some of the nova parts also.

77 - 79 Z28s with auto trannies had 3.42 gears, but not all were posis.
