Whats needed to retrofit LS1 into 70 Chevelle

Not sure if this is the proper place so if its not just send it where it needs to go. Anyway I want to install an Ls1 into the mentioned car using a junkyard engine and trans from a smashed newer Fbody. This way i get the comforts of new technology, and the looks and feel of the classic car. I'm mainly interested in how much a project like this will cost and if the swap is pretty straight forwrd, or if its going to take lots of work. Will the engine be able to use the exsisting motor mount locations, what about thet rans. I prefere the M6, but putting in a manual trans in an auto car might be to much work, so I will settle for auto if necessary. Just wondering if anyone has done this and if its to much trouble. Any comments are appreciated

It might take alot of work, but im sure lots of people have done it already. IF u can get most of the parts off the wrecked f-body that would help out a ton since the majority of those will be needed. If u go with a stick shift the shifter wont be in the stock location, and I assume you would have to get the driveshaft custom made since it would be too long. Someone on here prolly knows more so good luck

Oh yeah its been done, quite a bit now. Ive actually put 10,000 miles on my car since I finished it, but its down right now because of a blown clutch slave cylinder. Let me know if you have any specific questions. Also you might want to check out the conversions forum on LS1tech.com for massive amounts of information.

I assume running a manual trans will require the original clutch parts for a 70 chevelle, which would be hard to come by. Is this true, or can you use all the new assembly from the new Fbody's.
I've thrown in a 700r4 behind the same year chevelle, and it worked very easy, just needed slightly more space in the well, and ya the driveshaft needed shortening. Were you able to find a company that sells motor mounts or did you just make your own. Did all the accesories fit? Personally I could care less about air conditioning, but power steering sure would be nice. Are those custom made headers, about how much did they cost you.
Were there any unforseen problems that occurred. Did this project cost much more than anticipated. I will be building this car for my sister, so I don't want to keep saying, give me more money, and I know with these kind of projects its easy to keep needing more. I mainly want to do this swap for the drivability and gas mileage, as well as reliability. I think an old engine can work without problems, but she would be happier with something new and more modern. Have you taken your car to the track? Also what kind of mileage are you seeing, must be prety good with that 6 speed.

The only original 67 clutch part Im using is the pedal, everything else is from the T56.
I fabbed up the motor mount plates from some 1/4" steel plate. The headers and accesorry drive are from Street and Performance. There are several companies now that make getting this swap started easier than it was for me 3 years ago. Do prepare to spend some cash though, fuel system and wiring is where alot of the time and money go.

NICE car !! props to you and the effort you put forth with that! Looks like it paid off! Is the LS-1 stock? And have you had a chance to run it on the 1/4 yet?
