whats a good company for crate engines?
whats a good company for crate engines?
I was wondering what companys are the most affordable with the best quality? I see Recon engines are affordable. Summit sell a Recon 496 ci. 500hp/570tq. for $5800 complete. I don't know if I'd trust Recon though. How about speed-o-motive? Any experiences or suggestions.
Re: whats a good company for crate engines?
I've heard nothing but bad things about Speed-o-motive, but I've heard good things about American Speed.

Re: whats a good company for crate engines?
I've decided that Recon is not an option. I'm considering speed-o-motive for their 496ci. 580hp/569tq engine. Price for their engine is $7,045 turn key. I've also been looking at Golens engines, they have a 454ci. 450hp/554tq engine for $6500. I'm considering the Golens engine more now. Their warranty sounds more solid.
I was going to build the 454 in my garage, but hell a warranty, dyno sheet and all new parts add up to not much more than building what I already have. Any suggestions on Golens engines?

Course I would guess 12 - 20k for one of those. If not more.
General Motors 502 (not sure if this is still being produced but can still find them) or 572 (probably expensive)

Re: whats a good company for crate engines?
Really? On a page that I printed off their website, it says "turn-key dyno tuned engine". Does this mean they run it and tune it, but don't actually give you any numbers?
I called Engine Factory and they had their stuff together, but they use the 502 engine to make 510hp/570tq. for $8,000+. GM's 502 complete is 502hp/567tq for $7,500. Lastly theres Golens with their 454ci. 450hp/554tq engine. Base price of $6,500, minus starter etc... Golens engine, balanced, and dynoed is almost the same as GM's 502. Should I trust the General over Golens? This is a hard decision. GM's 502 fully assembled comes with a starter and flywheel, and makes more power. Any experiences and/or advice?

Re: whats a good company for crate engines?
This is getting difficult... Saw the new Jegs catalog and didn't see the zz502. Did they stop buiding it? I think they replaced it with the zz572. They still have the 502 H.O. I did see that the World Products 509 with 540hp/575tq is the same price as the zz502 was, $7495
. Plus, the 509 comes with a 2 year warranty. Any comments on world products?

Re: whats a good company for crate engines?
Worl Products 509 is a good buy. They've been at it for a long time and feel strongly enough about the quality to give it a 2 year warranty. That's the iron head motor by the way. I believe the aluminum head motor sells for ~$8500.
If you can budget that, then you should look at the tall deck packages out there. The 540 is pretty common and guys like Scott Shafiroff offer an "Ultra-street" crate engine, 2 year warranty, ~675hp on pump gas.
Most guys are building larger big blocks these days...

Re: whats a good company for crate engines?
No, no, thats fine. I'll stick to my "little" 509. I'm more about buying what fits my needs more than going overboard. For the money and the warranty I'll take the 509 over the ZZ502. $7500 is about the limit, I really didn't want to spend that much. I cant pass it up though.
Re: whats a good company for crate engines?
golensengineservice.com isn't a good place to get motors from? i was thinking of ordering one of those motors.
what about those TTmotors? from banks power how much do those crates go for?
