Question What r ur MPG's for ur 60's-70 V-8?

Hey all, '96 Z here but I'm trying to get some information about what kind of fuel consumption the true muscle cars got. I can obviously take a guess it wasn't great (by today's standards) but im still interested in some fairly real numbers that people have noticed. Your response is much appreciated b/c this is for a sociological paper and i cant seem to find mpg stats anywhere!

78 Trans Am, 400 motor, severely detuned from factory, and only got 12 mpg, I'll see teens on the highway only.....When motor is done, I hope I will have double digits.......
My mom has a '70 charger, 383, low output (8.5:1 compression), used to be 2 bbl, now 4 bbl+ cam/intake, gets about 12 mpg......Father's '66 charger, 318 2 bbl carb, about 16 mpg city, almost 20 hwy! Friend's '63 vette, 327/340hp, probably around 10 mpg......

Definately not a true musclecar, but my 78 Nova with a 305 2bl gets an average of 14mpg unless I really hammer it all the time, then it dips down to ~10mpg.

My '69 Z-28 with 396 bigblock with LS6 cam and L-87 Heads, Weiand Intake and 750 Holley is thirsty. But it is more or less as thirsty as any other Musclecar from that era.

On Highway running 55 to 60 mph I get about 12 mpg, in citytraffic it is down to about 8 mpg.

With a price for gas at $3.85 here in Sweden it is costly to say the least. In this July I spent $500.00 on gasoline!

Cool

My old '81 Z28 with the 383 averaged around 12 MPG with the 3.42's, and around 15 MPG with 2.56's. With the 2.56's, it actually wasn't too bad! Although, it wasn't that bad with 3.42's either.....as long as I left my foot off the pedal!!!! I think on a couple long trips with the 2.56's, I got somewhere around 18 MPG - but it was awhile ago, and I can't remember exactly.

HTH!

Do you think the bad mileage comes from being carburated?
