What is a 454 shortblock worth?

it's a 2 bolt main 70s block that has been bored .040 over. It has stock stroke crank, and I think stock length rods. I don't know what kind of pistons it's got. I was told it flattened a lobe on the cam, so it doesn't have any valvetrain stuff. It comes with 063 heads with small valves, that will need porting with bigger valves installed. They have oiled it on occasion to keep it from locking up.

What do you think would be a good price for this?

i bought 2 in the last 2 years complete stock bore rebuildable for 500 each .. one with a turbo 400 hooked to it.. ofcourse u throw away alot of it .. pistons manifolds carbs cams lifters push rods timing gears ect. ... look around before u put 600 bucks in those oval ports .. thats what i have in mine should have went another way (rectangle ports) .. when it was all said and done close to 5 grand in the one ..

I'd stay WAY less than $500 for just that.

Heads - well, the large oval ports with 2.19 intakes/ 1.88 exh, some bowl clean-up, (guides if needed, same with seats) , and MAYBE port match the intake gasket......should be TOO much. Way better than $800 for a set of Merlin BARE heads. Small oval ports are fine too (just need MORE port work).

Regardless, oval ports are the way for the street......rec posts give up too much on low end, normal everyday driving.

BBC = $$$, wherever you go. But if you wanna run with the BIGG DAWGS...lol....come big or don't leave the porch.

If you do all the assembly work yourself (except pistons on rods), machine shop do the minimum to the block (but do what's needed)..you can dump another $800 into a REALLY good rebild kit. And another $500-$600 for heads......find a used intake on ebay....same with a carb....you'll be in for a decent motor. Keep it around 9-9.5 comp unless you get a big overlap cam, then up to 10.5 (let the cam pros make that call on which cam is better).

Go with good pushrods, a SOLID cam (or roller if you can swing it), and you're set. Just get another spare tranny, and rear end
