The 77 motors have the big combustion chamber and small valve heads that are good for the gas milage they (GM) were looking for but not good for performance. I would say after 150k miles you should definately rebuild it or put another motor in it. One other thing you should look at doing is putting a better set of heads on there. If the 400 has a nice set of heads on it go for it and get a nice cam, manifold and carb to top it off. There are a lot of options on rebuilding or enhancing a motors performance. Just make a goal on what kind of performance you would like to see and go form there because if you just start slapping parts at it things won't match up right and you might wind up with a crappy set-up

haha i have basically that engine in my 67, its really pathetic isn't it. I'm gona start rebuilding it with a fresh block, thoes engines suck just get a new one. To rebuilt it you'd basically be replacing everything anyways

best racing said it right. I would key in on the heads though. If that 400 has decent heads then get it, check it out good, and then put it in, also it has more cubes!
If the heads are just stock on that 400 then forget it. Yank your engine, have the bottom end rebuilt with forged flat tops (or hypers) and get a set of dart iron eagle heads. They ARE the best bang for the buck especially if you can possibly find a good used set. Summit has them new for $900 (complete). Top it of with a nice dual plane intake and well tuned carb. Oh yea, and make sure you choose a nice hydraulic cam that is matched to the heads. You'll be happy with it.

I used to be in your shoes. I think you should search Ebay for some used heads or ask around the web and your area if there are any for sale. You might get lucky and find a set for a couple hundred bucks. Just remember, the heads are where the power is really made.
