Thinking about going to Vortec heads, questions...

I am considering going to Vortec heads... What all do I need to know... I know I need a new intake to fit the heads- but after that I dunno about how anything fits. I need as much info as possible, and is there a difference between the different sets of Vortec heads? Is getting them from a wrecked truck in a junkyard ok?

One small thing, you're potentially going to have to modify some of your brackets. If you have anything bolted to your intake, it won't fit the new one. GM changed the angle that the intake bolts are at.

I had to modify some of my accesory brackets when I swapped to the vortec heads. You will too if any of your intake manifold bolts are holding a support.

The stock heads are only good for around .460" lift. You can run LT4 retainers and get away with .488" with new springs. If you need to run more lift than that, it will require machine work.

Thanks for the info guys. So do LT-1 heads fit into the field of heads I can use? I read something about that, but it was kinda unclear. I didn't think you could, but that is why I am asking you guys.

Also, what about the Vortec 5.3's, they are LS-1 based engines, these vortecs would work?

extreme79z,

I was just wondering, what are the specs on your cam? Oh, and where is Delhi? I'm in Baton Rouge.

I am not sure the exact specs on this cam, I am gunna do a cam swap for christmas so I know exactly what I got.

BTW 30 mins west of Vicksburg, MS and 30 mins east of Monroe, La - basically that puts me in the middle of no where.

I am calling the wrecking yards today to check up on the heads. Hopefully I can find some, I have a 305, a set of 882 heads, and a Poncho 301 I'll offer with cash for a set of Vortecs..> Hopefully that'll get em goin'. If not, time to sell off some of my stuff.

Extreme
