There is a conversions section on LS1tech.com for people who are installing LS1 engines/trannys in different vehicles. Would probably help you a lot. I do think there are pieces/adapters available to make the use of the mechanical linkage possible. And you need to know if your T-56 is from an LT1 or LS1, they are different.

You're going to love the T-56. I have one in my 98 SS and once I got rid of the factory junk platinum spark plugs, I can pop it in 6th at 40 for max mileage. Or drop it down a few gears and make the tires smoke.

Can't decide between the 700 and T-56? I'd go with the 56. Having owned an 89 Formula 350 with the 700, I hated it. It has a super deep 1st gear (3.06) so it would smoke the tires too easy. I had to be really careful making a right turn onto a major road off a side street. Too much pedal and the rear end would come around. But if I gave it too little, it would shift too soon into 2nd and acceleration = blah. Your 406 is going to make a lot more torque, so would make 1st gear launch much harder. T-56 has a better 2.64 1st (most anyway, 93s are deeper) that makes it easier to launch. And YOU decide when to go into 2nd. Throw in the fun factor and double overdrive for good measure. JMO

The T56 is pretty simple, it uses a hydraulic clutch so all you have to do is make sure it will fit- if you get the stuff from a donor car you'll see what I mean, I'm guessing it will, but you've got the master & slave cylinder and the line between them, operation is just like the brakes. The shifter sits right on top of the rear of the trans, you'll have to line everything up under the car to see where it will come out at, hopefully it's in a spot you like or you'll have to improvise a little, maybe someplace sells stuff to move the shifter... Do you have the trans already? Check the spline count on the input shaft, I think it's 10 for LS1, 26 for LT1/SBC. If it's LS1 you're going to have to get a different input shaft and bellhousing.

BTW, a 406 SBC w/ let's say, 4.11 locker & T-56 & M/Ts would be an absolute blast on the street.
