Question so I ran into some problems............

Hey there, I have a 1975 camaro and i bought it with no engine and no tranny, it used to be an automatic V6 and I now have a 350 in it. I didn't want to put an auto trans so I decided to buy a T-5 5speed, my question is what type of bellhousing do i need to install the tranny.

can I use a bellhousing out of a late 80s/early 90s camaro since they came with a T-5?

I also want to run a hydraulic clutch.

someone told me that some bellhousings are offset about 17 degrees or so. would that affect my application.

thanx in advance!!!!:confused :

the bellhousing you are talking about was in third gen f bodies. It has the holes for the transmission rotated 17*. there are aftermarket companies that offer the parts you need to do this swap. Try Keisler? for your swap needs.

if that is the t-5 out of a third gen i wouldn't use it due to the fact that they cannot handle more than 200 hp,that is why it is only on 305's unless you drive easy----you should look for a m21 or m22 munsee stone crusher then you will have to find bell housing for that

82zzz: I thought of calling an aftermarket before but I'm only 18 and on a pretty tight budget. so i wanted to see if I would be able to use a bellhousing out of an other car. thanx for the info though!

chevynutman: I bought this world class T-5 brand new ($1600) and its supposed to handle 330 lb/ft of torque.
As for the muncies, I did look into them before buying the t5, i didn't like the fact that the price for the muncies (used) were only a few hundred $$ less than t5 and i really want overdrive(a bit more gas mileage wouldn't hurt!)

I had a muncie bellhousing out of an old truck and found that the bolt pattern is exacly the same, but the bore for the tranny is a bit bigger than what i need. does the bore size change between the truck trannys and camaros/novas ect. thanx in advance!

You need the bellhousing out of a 3rd Gen. because the trans shifter is offset 17*. In other words, if you use an early bellhousing the shifter will not be straight up. The 3rd Gen. bellhousing orientates the shifter so it points correctly. Also the 3rd Gen. bellhousing has the bracket for the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder.
Not positive on this, but I think the Ford 5 speed is NOT off set, so make sure it is the chevy one.
Look at the shifter mount surface and compare it to the line made by the two top trans. mount bolt holes.

if you have the big flywheel (168tooth)you will have to cut the bottom of the bellhousing.
the t5 was rated at 300 tq

so you're saying I need to ditch the 168-tooth and buy a 153-tooth flywheel, right? and will the 153tooth flywheel fit on an early sbc? and i would also need a neaddle-type pilot bearing instead of the solid pilot bearing right? TIA!

I like Borg-warner super t-10s

I have muncies and super t10's and i personally prefer the Supers. This is also the 4 speed that came in that era of camaro. The last one I had was in a factory 455 trans am that I pumped to well over 500 hp and it held up great.

i agree with the one gentlemen about not putting a 5 speed in that was deseign for a 305, they are week. If you really want a overdirve, I would shop the swap meets and try to pick up an aftermarket used M5, or a M6.

Lakewood also makes this belhousing: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku that will work with the hydraulic clutch.

I've had this car for over 8 months just sittin in my garage and I finally got the chance/money to work on it, and I just want to get it running for now, and once its running, start to modify the engine little by little, the 350 I have in it is not gonna even be close to 500 horsepower so i'm not that worried about breaking the t5 any time soon. and If it breaks i can just buy the G-force upgrade kit and It would stand up to 500 ft-lb of torque(thats what they say on their website anyway)

correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldn't this bellhousing be the same as if I were to get a used third gen. bellhousing off of ebay for about a quarter of the price of the lakewood one.

Yes it will work just fine, you don't NEED to spend this kind of money, just info.
