small block numbers

im very happy with the identification of my carb but now i need to find the specifics of my two motors. ive narrowed them down to displacement but would like to know the exact year and number of main bolts if possible.
the #'s are as follows
350ci-v0717chc, 3970010
327ci-k0124fb, 3956618
im trying to decide which block to use for a '79 z28

Re: small block numbers

Pull the pan?

Your 327 is from 68-69.
That block was also used for 302's and 350's.
The casting number won't specify whether its 2 or 4 bolt. The main caps are a machining operation. In other words a large journal 4" bore block could be machined for either.
400s are a different deal. You would generally look for a 2 bolt 400 block.
Your 350 block is the standard "010" casting found in virtually anything.
Either block would make a good foundation. Pick the best one that will clean up @ .030 and doesn't have an overheated looking main bore. The caps should fit tight. Also check the head bolt threads for integrity.

Re: small block numbers

v0717chc - 010 block

V = Flint engine plant
0717 = July 17
CHC was used on 3 different 350 blocks.
- 1975 L82 from a Corvette rated at 205 hp
- 1976 L82 from a Corvette rated at 210 hp
- 1980 used in full size cars

k0124fb - 618 block

K = St. Catherines, Ontario (Canadian built engine)
0124 = Jan 24
FB could be a 1955 265 (doubtful)
FB = 1969 327 rated at 235 hp with 2 bolt mains. Found in full size cars.

Personally I'd use the 010 block. Both are 4" bore blocks so it doesn't really matter which one you chose. The 010 block could be 2 or 4 bolt mains. You need to pull the pan to find out. Since it's from a car, I'd guess it's only a 2 bolt but if it was originally in a vette, it might be a 4 bolt. If it was from a pickup truck, there's a good chance it's a 4 bolt.

Re: small block numbers

You're both right. Your way doesn't require machining. His way does.

Re: small block numbers

thanks, i found out they did shortly after posting but it sparked my interests, are the cast iron vortec heads say at jegs or summit the same as the ones found on mid '90's 5.7l engines.
