Check casting # here:

http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm

Most desirable one is the 509 block.

well i baught the car tonight. not sure if its a 400 ci though. but i paid $1,600 for a rebuilt drive train and really nice inside. polished 16 in wheels. and runs great. now if it is a 400, what kind of heads and cam can i but and still keep it smog legal.

thanks.

You would have to research Cali's emissions laws and how they apply to swaps. At a minimum, any heads/cam you use would have to have a California E.O. Luckily a lot of good parts have this, including performer heads from Edelbrock:

i was thinking of ported vortec heads, a edlebrock performer plus cam. and a edlebrock intake. will i have to get the vortec heads drilled for the 400. any thoughts would be appritiated.

Yes. It's not hard, I did it by using a head gasket as a template for hole locations, and did the deed with a hand drill.

I think Dirt Reynolds did the Vortec on a 400 install. Might want to hit him up for some info. He hangs out here and at NastyZ28.com.
