retro fit tpi
retro fit tpi
i was just wondering how hard it would be and if it is worth the miney and time to put a tuned port incetion system on my 1977 camaro because i have a guy i work with that is intimadated by fuel injection and he said he will sell me the hole thing for 250 bucks. i have the holley systemax II kit and i am worried if i will need to add a chi or change the cam. but what sucks is the cam is matched to the heads so some advice would be nice
Advantages of TPI are better cold start characteristics, low end torque, fuel economy, etc. Other than that, it can choke off your hp, especially if it's off a 305 and goes on a 350.
The Holley systemax II can make 400 hp ~ 6,000 rpm. Put a TPI on there and it will drop dead above 5,000. That's why TPI guys ditch the stock TPI manifold and pay $$$ for an aftermarket unit once they start to get serious on the cam/heads they want to install.
Tell your bud to ebay it. Guys with mild roadsters/cruisers like the TPI for looks and the previously mentioned positives of the system.

thats to funny... i had a tpi off an 87 iroc on my '77. it was a fun project. i had to buy the after market wireing harness and replace almost every sensor, including the mass air (at $300 that sucked). it looked awsome, and it got alot of looks at the car shows. in the end though i never saw any mpg gain, and it did rob me of about 30 hp. i never got around to modding it out with a bigger manifold or runners but i know that while they do help the money would give better results if put elsewhere in the engine.
I wouldn't do it if I were you. The totally stock intake will choke the motor to the 4500 range, unless you get aftermarket runners and an aftermarket base ($700-$800 right there), so think about this carefully.
One thing that must be done too, if you decide to go for it, is the center two bolt holes on either side of the intake have to be grinded into an oval because on the camaros they came in, the center two head bolts were at a slightly different angle.

unless you can get a tpi manifold from an 85
Actually if you get a T.P.I. system off a '85-86 model f-body cars and '85-91 corvette have the late head bolt pattern. Corvette units have the fuel rail come out and around from the passenger side were f-body's have the fuel rail come out on the driver-side. All '85-86 f-body T.P.I.'s are 305 engines where the corvette units are all 350's. Also on computers 85-89 computers used a MAF sensor , '86-89s used the #1227165 computer. Only difference in the '89 computer is that they dropped the ninth injector and went to the same setup for cold start as '90-92... which is a speed density setup. Oh yeah here is something scary about computers GM used...'87 and up 4-cylinder/ 6-cylinder computers are speed density units and can be used with a V-8 aslong as you get a V-8 chip that has been reprogramed to put in it. Also most V-8 chips have VAT ( vehicle anti-theft). Theres a bunch of things to be understood about a T.P.I. swap the computer part is just one, you can modify the in-tank pump/sender unit to fit your second generation tank. Another thing is fuel-injectors, either way to make things short the conversion can be done with the right research, prep and knowledge. Would be just as easy to buy a Holley Stealth Ram M.P.I. unit for $2201.00
