pulley shims

I just perchased an aftermarket waterpump and I need about 3/4 of an inch worth of shims to allign the pulleys, I cant find a place that sells pulleys anywhere around where i am, and i dont trust online shopping (ive been screwed before), could someone lead me to a parts shop in northern california, or even a chain that i could look at? (pepboys, autozone, ruled out)

Re: pulley shims

That's a lot of shim. You might have gotten the short pump when your application needed the long pump. I think I remember seeing spacers that are used with some manufacturers aluminum pumps in these situations. They go behind the legs of the pump. That way they make just one pump and use the spacers for the long applications.

Re: pulley shims

The waterpump is the original waterpump for the camaro, its been the same since ive had it, but to compensate for the space between the waterpump and pulley there was about 40 washers instead of actual water pump pulley shims, and the whole fan, pulley isnt alligned and wobbles. Im in the process of deoakiefying things.

Re: pulley shims

The long and the short of it!
Read angel71rs's answer again. There are two water pumps for small block chevy's, short and long. You have the short but you need the long. With the long pump your pulley's will align perfectly. There are NO pulley shims per say. There are spacers for the fan, which allow you to move the fan fore and aft so that it aligns with the fan shroud.
After you have installed the correct pump you adjust the other accessories to align to the pump pulley if required.

Re: pulley shims

Im not worried about the fan and shroud at this point yet. Im attempting to get the waterpump pulley and the crankshaft pulley alligned, it has been alligned before, but what the previous owner did to align it was put about 40 washers instead of the proper shims that are made for waterpumps. And in putting washers instead of shims the pulley was not balanced. Again a long waterpump would be way too long (difference between short and long pumps are 2 inches, short being 2"'s from block to core, and long being 4"'s from block to pump core.") and a short waterpump is about 3/8" too short. All i need is to be directed to a parts store that sales these shims. Autozone, Pepboys do not carry and i am not in the position to deal with online shipping. (under 18, cant have credit card and my parents suck.)

They actually do make water pump pulley shims to align the pulleys.

Re: pulley shims

Crank Pulley, o2 pump, alternator, A/C, are all aligned. Nothing is missing on crank pulley. I need assistance in finding a place that sells water pump pulley shims/spacers.

Re: pulley shims

To be 3/4" off you have the wrong pulleys. Verify the depth of the pulleys compared to known correct ones. I know that in some areas the big block and small block will physically interchange as far as bolting up, but the depth is way off.

Moroso makes water pump pulley shims but you'll need a few packs worth to get to 3/4". Generally with the CORRECT pump and pulleys you'll be within .010-.025", not .750". So the shims come in much smaller thicknesses. Personally I would not try to shim it, I would get the correct pulleys/pump on there.

Yes but only for VERY SMALL misalignments. See "camcojb" post.

Cool Re: pulley shims

Your pulley on the waterpump is not aluminum is it ? Most of the aftermarket pulleys are made for a "short" water pump. Yes, they bolt on but, your belts won't line up. You would need a new pulley to line everything up. I have also seen where manufactures have installed the pulley flange, on the water pump wrong, causing misalignment. As stated before there are shims available from Summit, but they are for 1/32 to 1/8 off, not 3/4 ! Look at another car and see what pulley you need.

Re: pulley shims

I axagerated when i said 3/4, probably shouldnt have. But anyway around 3/8" is probably the distance that the waterpump pulley is missaligned. The pulley was spaced before, but with about 40 little washers instead of shims, causing a missalignment.

Talking Re: pulley shims

3/8 of an inch is still a belt thickness or a pulley groove. I would quit thinking about shims and make sure you have the correct pulley. Pulley's were different between short and long waterpumps. If your car is 1969 or newer it should have a long waterpump. Get the proper pulley with the correct number of belt grooves and it should be fine.

Re: pulley shims

I believe you have a Corvette pump which is the third different kind of pump Chevrolet used. Corvette pumps use an altogether different pulley arrangement and I belive a 3/4" pilot instead of the standard 5/8".
