Port and Polish

Hi, im new the forum, i just bought a old 350 small block engien and im rebuilding the whole thing

I was wondering was the normal price to get your heads ported and polished would be?

Also, how big of a horse power gain would i get if i got the port and polish done?

Thanks!

Welcome to the board. Prices vary a lot by area and what you want done. By the time you consider what it will cost to get the heads rebuilt, plus the cost of the port work, a lot of times you are better off getting some new low buck heads. And with the newer heads you get a modern combustion chamber that makes more power and has better resistance to preignition.

Vortecs are popular, but they require a specific intake. But if you have to buy an intake anyway... Lots of good Vortec info here: http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56505

Vortecs are 64 CCs, if you need larger chambers, there are iron heads w/72CCs available for under 750.

Just go get a set of Dart Iron Eagles. They are not real expensive and they come in a variety of sizes, per your specific application.

Just a thought,

In this case the short answer is probably NO. But there are a lot of things to consider before you can deside. The most basic are what are you goals? Which heads do you have? What other performance upgrades are you going to do.
Saying you have a 350 that your rebuilding doesn't give us much information. Are you leaving it stock, or are you going for greater HP. How much? What's it going in? The more detail you supply the better an answer you'll get.

FWIW and to itinerate what's being said about the having your heads ported: in my area a really quick touch up starts at $500 with a full blown job easily hovering around the $1500 mark for having a shop do the work. Biggest reason guys take heads in is to increase air flow, but when you see true to life pricing when hiring it out it's a no brainer to typically use that money and just buy new heads with increased flow..ie larger heads.
