Pitman Arm wont come off!!! Help!!
Pitman Arm wont come off!!! Help!!
I am replacing my power steering gear box on my 81 Camaro. Everything is off and unbolted but I can't get the darn Pitman arm off. Its the opposite end that connects to my steering shaft. There is a boot and a stud coming up thru the hole and I cant get it to come off! Is there a special puller to get it off? Please help! Thanks!
Re: Pitman Arm wont come off!!! Help!!
I had a problem removing it on my 81 a few years back... If you have an Autozone, they'll loan these out...

I do have a AutoZone by my house, I'll get these tomorrow. Thanks for the help, I was slammin, and hammering, and wedging, and cussing the arm for over an hour. Thanks so much!
Re: Pitman Arm wont come off!!! Help!!
yeah, the screw one is the one needed to take it off the box, I remove the big nut, crank it down tight, then give the arm a few whacks with a big hammer, it makes a loud pop when it comes loose
Re: Pitman Arm wont come off!!! Help!!
I couldnt get thenut loose so I detached it from the other side. Opposite side off the pitman arm. Came off then but I still cant get that darn nut loose. I think it takes 1-5/16 socket and I dont have one. I went down and bought a huge Cresent wrench and it still wont come off!

I'd be afraid a cresent wrench would round off the nut... I used a 1/2" drive loooong breaker bar... You can slip a piece of pipe over the end to get more leverage.
