Motor I.D. help..??

I'm redoing a '73 Nova with a 350 2-bbl (told by owner)...BUT...the Timing Set, when put with the aligment dots "together", (top of crank gear and bottom of cam gear,) the Intake "valve" is OPEN, drivers' front cyl..(???)
When the dots are both on top of both gears as Pontiac, then it seems to be a TDC on compression stroke....?
Also plug wiring is different....
Part Numbers are;
(front of block) 13W281058-V0517CHB
(rear of block) 3970020
Any help is appreciated...

What is this motor?
Where is No#1 on the distributor?
Where is No#1 cylinder?
(It's different from sbc like my IROC)

If "13W281058" matches the numbers on the VIN, then its probably the original motor.

CHB = 1973 307cid 115hp 2-bbl manual trans.

Thanks jg, I was thinking 307 was more common in the Nova 3-on-the-tree, but he swore it was a 350...now I know, it makes more sense.

oh, and just so you know, dots together is TDC of compression stroke for cylinder #6, both up is TDC of compression stroke for cylinder #1
