I'll bump this to the top, Todd. Hopfully, someone will take a shot at this for you.

YS= 185hp 400/automatic combo on a 75 Firebird.

But Pontiac used those 2 letter codes throught the years--meaning a YS code could be in other years. For example---in 74 the YS was the 200hp 350 GTO engine.

Now since your car is suposed to have the YS code and it does---its very likely the original engine.

Next to the distributor hole there is a casting number that has a letter with 2 or 3 numbers. The letter is the month of manufacture- A=Jan. B=Feb,etc.

The next number or two is the day, but sometimes the factory left the first part off, i.e. 5 could mean 5,15,25.The most important is the last number,it is the year of Manufacture it is not always the model year,as most blocks are cast a few months before the car is made

Now go rebuild that and get some decent numbers!

what is your head casting?
