Looking for people that have swapped a SBC into a 4th Gen
Looking for people that have swapped a SBC into a 4th Gen
I sold the LT1 out of my 4th gen and I am installing a carburated SBC.
Since the computer controls most everything in the vehicle, I am going to have to re-wire the car. At least to make it cleaner and easier, I would be smart to re-wire the car.
I am thinking Painless, but I wanted to see what others used and what advice they could offer.
Thanks in Advance.

Personally, I think you're insane for getting rid of a FI engine to go carb! Carbed engines tend to use more fuel and end up being more radical (less streetable) to go as fast as a FI engine. Even if the LT1 was messed up, you could build a stroker for less than what you are looking at.
Its more than just a bolt on and a rewire. The motor mounts are totally different. Not to mention you aren't even wired up the same for the ignition system, and the fuel system will produce way too much pressure for a carbed engine. Your going to have to find some way to hook all the accessories up too because the original brackets wont work and I'm not sure the brackets from an old engine will work on the new components. Not to mention if you even have to get into emissions testing!
Hope you don't plan on ever selling this car because the resale value just went to crap!
Even if this is a total strip car, the FI will be far more efficient at metering and have much better throttle response. I've seen LT1's get in the high 12's with bolt ons only and still get over 20 mpg highway and be totally streetable. The very least you should do since you are determinde to go carbed is get a 502 and wedge it in there.

Not looking for an argument here.
I have taken all fuel system issues into account. the car is a body and a frame right now. The only accessories are headlights and gauges, which are all after market. Fans, fuel pumps, etc, all electrical is ok.
A motor plate is being used, so the motor mounts do not matter.
I am using a distributor, and Painless makes a system that uses a GM ignition plug so you can still use the keyed ignition.
I was more looking for people to tell me about how they had to cut the cowl and how much. I really don't have any other concerns.
I am building this car for myself, but I am sure that Iw ould be able to sell it if I wanted to without a problem.
No flame towards you, I just find your opinion to be way off base.

I haven't done it but me and a buddy will be doing similiar projects he will be doing soon a V6 98 firebird into a carb V8 SBC chevy,me A 00 z28 to a carb SBC chevy.I tried asking this question and beleive me I quite dont get why people get upset.I got flamed for asking this question. They said the same thing,Why are you doing this?Me personally think this a good Idea..Actually Awsome IDEA.Parts for the old typical Sbc are way more cheaper than Lt1 products.I know that for sure.Thats why me and my bud are doing it.Ive tried to do some reasearch, got some few ideas and a few pics.I know I will need either custom fab up motor mounts,or a motor plate in which I have no Idea were to get.Custom drive shaft, cutting of the bottom front wishield, not sure what you call it but this is for the carb to tuck in rightunder the fire wall. All that electrical stuff is easy,Well atleast for the one who is experienced in this type of work.My buddy is.
.I wanna here your ideas.I think theres a guy here by the Screen name stroked97ta or something like that had a 383 sbc stroker, might wanna page him.Well let me know how your progress goes as I gather some more ideas myself.

I also forgot to mention,Carburated Cars are just as fast if not more faster than a Fuel injected vehicle.I have seen many.Dont get me wrong I also love the fuel injected vehicle,I have one my self a 01 Ls1 formula with a.c
.Remeber this also. You will no longer have to worry about Paying $500 for custom programming,no more of those annoying trouble codes(SES light).A carbed car can be easily tuned. You also dont need a radical *** big block to achieve desecnt times either. As a matter of fact my buddy is running some good times at the track with another Sbc stroker that he has in a blazer of his.Time and time again I will always say this A old sbc will cost you way more less than building a Efi motor.Just my experience with 5 cars that I have owned and modded.

Ya, carbed cars can run just as fast, but they tend to be more radical and burn more fuel to create the same power of a FI engine. I ran high 12's in my Camaro with 4.11 gears,a 10" converter, 750 cfm Holley, and a .507" lift cam. LS1s run that with far less gear, cam and fuel and still retain their distance drivability.
Hi I have a 95 camaro coupe used to have the 3.4 v6 I got the car from a old guy that did all the work on the car himself He put in a 388 stroker that has a carb on it . He got most of his parts from summitt racing He keep the 5 speed tranny put in a 95 z28 rear end with 3.73 gears needs to be finished got real good deal on car .....speedo don`t work without the computer, need rear brakes for the 95 z28 rear and need to clean up his wiring and car will be finished ........I don`t now how fast the car is but can out run friends 97 camaro ss ( his car is all stock ) without even trying hard
Yes I do think that would be the way to go,but you do need a Locked-out disributor to be used with the Magnetic trigger.Or use of a Crank trigger Distributor.I think these are more low profiled and should give you a little more clearance under the firewall.
The reason the firewall gets cut in my case is because of the Super Victor/Holley Dominator combo that sits on top of it.
So I suppose its my issue that it needs to be cut. Oh well its become more and more race car every day.

Have you cut it up already? You'll probably have to cut the cowl right to the base of the windshield!
And then you'll probably have to break your arm in a couple places to get to the #7 and 8 plugs.
But hey, if that's what you want then DO IT!
BTW, the LS1 is faster not necessarily because it's EFI'd but because it's just a better design (especially the heads). No siamesed ports and that crap that us Gen 1 and big block guys have to deal with. Before you know it someone will make an intake so you can put a carb on an LS1!

I'll check my e-mail in a bit. And no it wasn't That pricey, just alot of problem solving and .05 and dime stuff.
And I will as soon as I get the eibach springs and find some shocks!!! Get me on one of those messenger accounts if you have any questions. Oh, and i went from a 3.4 w/ a 5 speed to a 5.7 carb 350 w/ TH-350.
See ya around
