Question Looking for an engine-rebuild FAQ

Hey folks, been lurking ALL OVER this board researching stuff whilst hammerring out ignition and smog issues on the '96 Z-28. I must say that this place is an invaluable resource, and I want say thanks for all your help, even though you don't know who you are.

The reason I'm over here in the Classics section is that I've got a '77 GMC truck with 283,000 miles on it that I managed to blow the engine on. (Friggin' oil filter fell off on the freeway. Promptly afterwards, I melted a couple of mains, and the motor stopped. Yes, I am both skilled AND proud of my accomplishments. NOT! )

Having acquired a used small-block for free from I believe an '82 Camaro that's had the heads removed, but is otherwise fully functional as near as can tell by a casual inspection, I'd like to put it back together with new gaskets and plunk it into my beater old truck so it'll run again with somewhat minimal additional effort and expense.

That'll leave me with the truck engine, too. It's got 4-bolt main-bearing caps, and a beefy crank/rods, and a four-barrel carb, as this was the heavy-duty conmmercial-rated truck package. That should make for a nice starting point for a durable, healthy performance engine. (I might sell it as a core to someone with the same idea. I haven't decided yet.)

The kicker: I've never detail inspected/re-built a small-block Chevy before. I have what ever appropriate tools and skills are neccessary to accomplish this, outside of a machine shop, but I'd like to read up on the details and Chevy-flavored specifics, hints, kinks, how-to's and whatever other useful info I can be pointed at by someone who's done it before, HERE, so I don't have to run out and buy a book on the subject.

The InterNet is a vast information storehouse, the info's out there. Can some of you folks spare me the Time and effort of sifting through a bunch of extraneous search-engine results with a few choice links? I'll be forever in your debt.

Thanks!

Milky

Some links are dead, but you might want to look at the ones down in 181 - 189.
