L31 in 85 elcamino and headers.
This car has a L31 330 hp crate engine I put in 3 years ago. The owner before me put edelbrock g body h.o. emission headers on it like the monte ss stock style set up. Well they are rusted bad and a hole will be in the near future. I want to put convential long tubes on it. does the exhaust have d shape ports? What header would be best with future plans for a radical sounding cam or has good with lift restrictions. I just want to match it up as well as possible. Also it will be getting 4:56 next month if that helps.

Hooker headers have a good rep., though there are lots of good headers out there. For "D" port heads, you need ones with the roundish primary ports not the square. There are no "D" port shaped headers that I know of.
With the El. you may have to just get what fits.

just get heddmann on a budget or hooker if you got the cash in 1 5/8" or 1 3/4" if you're over 450 hp. get whatever SBC headers are for your chassis and you'll be fine. i have a worked over vortec small block with 1 5/8" and it went faster at the track than 1 3/4" headers

Re: L31 in 85 elcamino and headers.
Thanks for the replies. I have pulled some photo's out from when I put the engine in and there not d port. I will go with 1 5/8". when I went from shorties to long tubes on the Z28 I lost mph in the quarter on but picked up mph on spray. I dont plan On spraying this one. I will be doing a cam but I need to find out why gm recommends not reving it above 5500 first. I dont know if its the valve train or why they put in mags not above 5500 rpm.
I do like this engine I the only thing I have done on it is check the floats and set timing at recommended 10 tdc and put 93 in it. Its a real torque monster and has no problem picking up the 265/50/15 with the 2:73's in it. I will be playing with the timing and jetting once the rear is in it And go to the track to get results.

it's due to the cam and the fact that they won't warranty a motor that's raced. honestly how high do you plan on revving a stock shortblock anyways? i'd say 6k to 6500 would be the MAX and even that might be shortlived

with my LT1 Z28 it dumped the clutch at 7000 off the line and reved it past 6000 everday of its life. The car had 99,400 miles when a valve spring let go that had 1,100 miles on it. and #1 valve smacked a piston real good.
I was thinking 6- 6600 myself and also the cam goes in and what shift points show the best e.t.'s As far as warranty I was told when I bought it even though I had ase's That it a 1 year warrannty installing it myself. I figured with 3 years and 20,000 on it anything wrong should have apeared.
