Re: just joined
Welcome to the board. Have never run a Magnum 280, but did have a negative experience with a B&M Holeshot converter in my nephews Chevelle with a 454. Shifts were really soft and it spun too many rpms thru the lights.
It had a fresh TH400, so we didn't know if it was tranny or converter. So I told him to go to tranny supply house and get a rebuilt 6 lug vette converter for testing purposes. These have a little higher stall and are beefier. Shifts immediately felt firmer and rpms thru the lights dropped by ~ 500. Et dropped too, 4 tenths IIRC. He was so happy, he left the vette converter in there. Don't know if that particular Holeshot was defective or if that's typical, but I'll never use or recommend one that's for sure.

Re: just joined
Having a stick I dont have to deal with the torque converter as part of the equation, but one thing to remember is that Comp Cams recommends atleast a stall of 2500+ with this cam. Do you know what you compression ratio is?
Re: just joined
I had a 280 comp cam in a hot sbc 350. Its a healthy cam with a definite lopey idle but still streetable. You're going to want a minimum of 9.5:1 compression ratio. 650-780 cfm carb, and headers.
I had a four speed in my car, so stall speed wasn't an issue. Comp Cams says this is the largest cam you can use with an automatic and a stock converter, but power accesories may be affected. You'll want 3.73-4.11 rear gears to get full use out of this cam.
