Question Inline fuel pump with mechanical too?!---

I just got a setup that needs an inline fuel pump....what do I do with the stock mechanical one? Do they both run together?! Thanks---

Re: Inline fuel pump with mechanical too?!---

take the mechanical one off and put a blocking plate in its place, you can buy these from summit or jegs and make sure you take out the lifter/pushrod thing that powers the mechanical fuel pump

I am using an old school trick on my chevelle. People been using this setup for a very long time! I have a Holley red pump out back pulling fuel from the stock pickup assy. It goes thru the stock fuel line to a HO carter mechanical pump and then to my Holley DP. Never had any problems and the engine is making over 450 HP at the crank.

The mech. pump will also act like a pressure regulator

i don't understand why you put a electric pump in the back and then run the fuel through a mechanical pump. ther way I look at it when the fuel gets to the mechanical pump it will flow and have the same pressure as if there was no electrical pump.

The electric pump out back pushs the fuel up to the mech pump and eliminates any chances of there being a starvation situation where the mech pump can't pull the fuel fast enough thru the gas line (like on a hard launch !! ). I "might" get away without the electric pump but I don't want to take any chances. I could also eliminate the mech pump and use a regulator but I choose not to.

It's a solid proven fuel system that is very reliable !

Thats why all your new EFI cars have the pump in the tank.

Re: Inline fuel pump with mechanical too?!---

you guys do understand that pumps dont create suction or pull right? atmospheric pressure pushes the fuel to the pump and then the pump creates a higher flow rate. pressure is then created by pushing the fuel through restrictions like the outlet port and the fuel line going to the carb. This is why gas tanks have to be vented. So I guess what realy happens is during a hard launch the atmospheric pressure acting on the fuel gets ****ed up. I guess theres more of a chance to push the fuel a short distance rather then to the mechanical pump but either way I would think both pumps would starve. I wonder how much of a gain would be found using something like a pressurized gas tank, but I've never heard of a pressurized gas tank. What do you guys think?

Pressurized as in EFI ?

efi dosent use a pressurized gas tank they just use high pressure fuel pumps.

Ahh, OK

I think if there was an advantage to using a pressurized system, the engineers of the big auto companies would be utilizing it already.
