very cool car
why not buy a BBC? if not, i believe if ur going to run 500hp to the wheels on a SBC its mostly compression with the best of the best in parts, custom gas mix, forged everything....
im pretty sure that there are some more guys on here and can probably help you out more then i could.
good luck

9's from a 350?! You don't ask for much, do ya?
Hopefully, money is not much of an object for you, because if you want 9's, it better not be.
Without going into crazy expensive custom one-off stuff like sheet-metal intake manifolds, here are a few of my suggestions. Also, remember, to build a 350 to do this, you have to be prepared to tear this thing down and rebuild it fairly frequently, so keep that in mind too.
First of all, start with fairly loose clearances. I'm not going to recommend any, because I've never built, or known anyone to build, a 9-second 350. Closest to that is a friend of mine with a 383 small-block Ford running 10.7's on motor. But tight clearances is a guranteed way to make your engine go boom.
You could probably get a set of World Products 230cc heads and hog them out with some big-*** valves and make it work, MAYBE, but my suggestion would be to go with Chevy's SB2.2 heads. They have 15 degree angles for the valves, which will require a custom valvetrain (go with shaft rocker system from Jesel, do NOT go with regular roller rockers/stud girdle). Some heavy duty *** triple springs will be required, because you'll probably have to spin that sucker well over 8000 RPM, as will titanium retainers, and, if you've got the money, titanium valves would be nice too.
I'd probably mill the heads down to raise your compression a little bit. Personally I like using as small of a dome as possible on pistons, but you will definitely have to run a dome, because you'll want around 13 or 14:1 compression on this thing (will probably require leaded racing gas, or, like you mentioned, alcohol). Remember, if you run alcohol, you'll have to jet your carburator up, build it for alcohol, and use fuel lines that are alcohol safe. If you plan on running nitrous, you're going to have to run pretty big ring gaps. For your application, figure about .007" per inch of bore diameter for the 1st and 2nd ring, so for a 355, about .028". Yes, same gap for top and bottom ring. The theory nowdays is that the same gap bottom ring helps relieve inter-ring pressure and provides a better seal, reducing wear and increasing horsepower.
For the cam... BIG. I'd go solid roller with about .720 lift and around 310 duration @ .050. You won't find something like this on the shelf, so you're going to have to call a few cam companies and get their suggestions.
The bottom end will have to be TOP OF THE LINE. Also, a Chevy Bow-Tie block would be a good idea, with billet splayed mains. A billet crankshaft with aluminum rods are a must.
If I'm not mistaken, you can get used SB2 heads from NASCAR teams for dirt cheap. I didn't exactly build you an engine, because I certainly haven't built one to this caliber, and I don't know anyone that has, I just know the basics. So that will get you started. You need to get on a higher-tech forum than this and talk to some big-name companies.

well we have a 6 / 7 second SBC here local...
it can be done, its all about how much ya wanna spend.... Like said about... ur probably going to have to run progas or some sort of custom blend, with super high compression.... ive seen streetable 500hp SBCs but i dunno....
i would rather spend the time and money and invest into a big block.... not like its going to be hard considering its a nova... it will hold a 454... 502 no problem.

I would shoot for a 600 to 650 crank HP small block. Not easy but not super hard. Sure you will need a big cam, big heads, and a good amount of compression but it can be done. There is a guy here in AZ that has a mid to high 9 second Camaro. He is tight lipped about the specs but its all motor and he has run for around 2 years tht way. The first thing i would do is make sure that the car is set up first. So many people just throw HP at a car and hope it goes faster and when it doesnt they donn't understand why. Example. I have a friend with a SC Camaro that put down 648 the the wheels ran an 11.2. My other buddy put 316 to wheels and ran an 12.2. The 12.2 was in a 70 Nova that has a decent setup for drag racing. Slide-a-link bars, dragradials, a good tranny, and a torque converter matched to the cam and gears. Your car is relativly light and cam be made to go fast. Just make a total package, don't just throw HP at it. What are we Supra guys.

World Products makes a 600+ hp 454 small block and I believe it even runs on pump gas. It's rather expensive, but whatever you build is going to be expensive anyway. Shafiroff (sp?) has a crate SBC with around 1000 hp.
Oh Come now guy's. If I can Or rather If grand dad can build an AMX with an AMC390 that wil turn 9.60's with me driving it<I'm sure a 9 second 350chevy shouldn't be that hard.....
Grand dad died Nov.99 RIP.
But i have sence Got the AMX And i am Completly tearing it down Rebuilding the whole car....
Building the drive beyond insandity.Cause in MeMorie of Grand dad I'm Going to Put in the 9.20's 9.40's Zone.

Not Bad for the "inferior TBI" setup huh??
after poeple see this Run they Quit talkin smack about TBI's.
S/S AMX is now under going a complete restoration/buildup est cost: $40,000.
so Give me some time to get it back together.I tore car apart last month then a i founfd out what is was going to cost so it won't be going back together as fast as it came part.

Now if this can be done with a Small block AMC..........
A small Block chevy should be a cake walk.........
I Run 120octane Cenex fuel, dose awsome with it.
With old setup I got ok gas Milage,I'mtold the new setup shoukd be about the same Give or take 2mpg....
The Old setup TBI let's me run 5mpg city,and 7mpg highway.great Huh??LOL.......About 1-3mpg racing......very efficent i should daily drive this beats.
.............
only street drove old setup a few time's.
Just see what it would do it Ran fine But instead of running 165*f-175*F it got up to 187*f witch was ok but when I got on it the sauterday night it wasn't Happy.
It heated up right up to 195*F in 2 lap's on the avenue.
But I went to the local 2 car show's drove it here friday, and hit ave friday night putted around a few laps parked and watched.
satDay Night I took it out on the Avenue and raced it a bit not much of any competition for that car.
have Done this 4 times a year with the AMX had to rering it ,And main/Rod bearing's every spring but that wasn't so bad.
the new setup I won't even try to force it on the Avenue I'll have my $$$$$ invested now so it will Do the ocasional Union grove to do A few run's.....2or 3 times a year hit the local car show's 3or 4 time's. i'll also hit the avenue 3-4times a year but not to cruze just to sit at the parking lot and watch the kiddie's race, well i Might take a lap here an therw but nothing real heavy.so this car might see all of 200Miles a year if that....
but it did run mid 9's and was street driven.......
Should run low 9's and still get a few Run's on the street....
if it has Vailid plates all working light's and 2 seat's it's street leagal around here.Cop's don't mind the Cruzing<they'll let you race but you got be shut down by 45mph. anybody runing Around 50-53Mph will get 2 warning's then they get slamed with a fine...
$286.00 & 6 piont's.
new setup i am told might be a bit more street friendly.
but i'll see.......I don't mind pushing it But i don't want to reck it.

I'm not sure as to how emission's leagel it will be...
but i have a few idea's...
I'm in wi so emission's are really a bother.......
But a 500hp 350 ...........
350 borded over .040,10.6:1,292*Dur.625lift cam,Dart iron eagla head's 58cc,edelbrock 4x2 intake either 2-650cfm carb's or 2-670cfm TBI's holley comander 950......
and you should be 480-520 hp easy.....
200shot of go go jucie would really rock......
now the tranny is all up yo you i but i ewould sugest a 3.73 or 411 gear's.......
Good luck man hope it goes good can't wait to see the out come....

You're going to need one heck of a 350 to get a 9.anything pass out of it. You may want to look into aftermarket blocks such as a motown or a dart little m. With these blocks you can increase the cubic inches to big block levels and it will look like a small block chevy. Just my thoughts.
