how much HP can a carbed 305 make?
like it says, how much? it has to be emmisions legal, want to drive it daily, im hoping for 250-300 rwhp and another 150-250 shot of dual stage nitrous to round it out.
im new to carbs, so whats the combo i should go with? carb, manifold, cam? will this be fuel efficient?
i have a lt1/t56/dfi as well, just wondering if i should keep things simple to make it easy for me.
thanks

Re: how much HP can a carbed 305 make?
bulletproof internals, ported heads mild cam, or a nitrous cam, performer rpm manifold, longtubes with high flow cats and a plate nitrous system you can easily make ALOT of hp
Re: how much HP can a carbed 305 make?
i was planning on a scat crank, eagle or scat forged rods, forged high compression trw pistons, perhaps ported heads, deffinatly a nitrous friendly cam, and deffinatly longtubes.
now my confusion lies with the carb and intake setup. i know nothing of carbs or how to tune them. whats a good size or brand that will give me good hp and drivablility?
can the above make 300 rwhp without the nitrous? i want to add another 150-250 with a plate dual stage system.

Re: how much HP can a carbed 305 make?
Not to many people build 305's... props to you for doing something different. I remember seeing a 305 build up in Car Craft with some good numbers. So why are you going with the 305? Any reason? Or is it just to be different?
Re: how much HP can a carbed 305 make?
Sounds like my future plans. 305 gets a little better mileage than a 350 set up the same way, and they are a dime a dozen. If you are getting a new crank, go ahead and get a 3.75 stroke. With the short 5.56 400 rods you can still use off the shelf 305 pistons. My plan is the use the Scat 383 crank I already have, forged pistons, some ported Vortec heads, and a hyd roller cam. Toss on a Performer RPM or Victor Jr, and around a 600 to 750 carb, and it should make an easy 300 at the wheels. I also have a T-56 going behind it; best of both worlds.
Just remember with the smaller bore, most 2.02 heads won't fit. The Twisted Wedge will, or stay with a 1.94 valve.
Hot Rod did a build up a while ago; 400 crank and rods, Dart S/R heads and a 268 hyd cam made right at 400 ft/lbs of torque and 325 hp on the engine dyno.

Re: how much HP can a carbed 305 make?
its cheaper to get a hold of and im hoping its more fuel efficient then a 350. this car will be driven back and forth to work/school. now i have the lt1 t56 combo, but dropping in a 305 carb may be easier to do for fueling. and the nitrous is just incase i really want it to rip.
if i go lt1 then i want to use the t56, then that will complicate things a bit more with driveshaft and cross members and pedals and hydrualics.
if i go carb then i will stick to a th350. havent decided, just doing some research as to what will be the easiest for me.

Re: how much HP can a carbed 305 make?
What year vehicle? I am putting mine into a 70 Z-28 one day. The T-56 bolts up to the 305, if it is a late model one piece rear main, and you can use the 3.5" alum driveshaft for a Mustang by changing the yoke and u-joints.
The pedals are a hassle, but the OD will save you big time over that T350.

Re: how much HP can a carbed 305 make?
I would definately consider putting the 6-speed in. Besides the added mpg, they are just flat fun to drive. I looked at mine, looks like we can slide the crossmember back, drill a couple new holes, and probably cut and reweld the mounting pad. That is what I had to do to put a T-56 in a 86 Monte SS.
There is also a guy that makes a better hyd setup, with a mounting plate, for the 2nd gens. I am looking into that rather than mess with the stock plastic actuator cylinder. But either way can be made to work.

Re: how much HP can a carbed 305 make?
yeah i heard that you just move the cross member back, but i was a bit worried about the correct angle. do you have info on the guy that makes the hydrualic set up?
Re: how much HP can a carbed 305 make?
I like seeing 305 projects since I pulled mine out.
If you are definately going to make a strong rotating assembly and the plan is to spray more than 200hp worth of nitrous, an Edelbrock Vic Jr. intake would be best. If you could do Vortec heads and get a nice compression ratio, I believe the small efficient ports would make sweet power. Matching that with Edelbrock's new Super Victor Vortec intake and a nitrous plate would be a powerhouse combo. The ports of the Super Vic Vortec are small and perfectly match the iron vortec head's ports. I know this because this intake just arrived at my house and it's too small for my E-Tec 200 head's ports. Off to the porter they went.
Goodluck!

Re: how much HP can a carbed 305 make?
Cool, you guys give me hope! I have a 1985 TA in addition to my 1998 Z and I am wanting to make it a daily driver after restoration. The car runs good now, but I was thinking that a 305 didn't make any power. If I could get 250hp to the wheels I think I'd be happy.

I don't think he'll mind!

The sig contains a 250 RWHP 305 build, with more restictive emissions requirements than you'll have in a '79.
But, if you don't have an engine, forget a 305. It will cost you more to get to 250 RWHP with a 305 than it will with a 350. If you're expecting 300 emissions-compliant RWHP from a 305, you can pretty much forget it. If you have a 305, go ahead and do the go-fast things around the shortblock, but if have to get into the shortblock, cut your losses and go get a 350.
Although an amusing brain exercise, the talk of great power out of a 305 is not realistic - especially if you expect it to be cheaper. Get real and go get a 350 builder.

Re: how much HP can a carbed 305 make?
i would run a 650cfm carb with a dual plenum intake, duals are better for the street, give the motor more eual fuel flow... should run pretty good with that shot of NOS... good luck man, no detination!
