help! need some more low end torque out of 302
i have a made 302 and i was looking to get some more low end torque out of it. I was thinking about replacing the heads on it(stock 882). It has a Clevite camshaft 306 duration/lsa 144/valve lift 447/cam lift 298. It has dome pistons(don't know what brand or size). Edelbrock 600 cfm carb. I'm open to any suggestions about changing the camshaft or the heads.
Re: help! need some more low end torque out of 302
882s are 76cc, but unless you know what domes you have on there, no way to tell what your compression would be with 64cc heads, might end up too high with 64 or even 72cc. Were the pistons marked?
The cam you have (L79) is seriously outdated. Lazy ramps with a lot of overlap. If you replaced it with something more modern, like the HE268 from comp cams, you would get more low end AND top end.
1st find out what pistons you have so you can figure out what cc heads you can run. Shoot for ~ 10-1 to maximize torque. Then install a more modern cam. Automatic or manual?
I know a lot of guys will tell you bs like "you need to rev a 302" and it's true if you install a bigger cam, but then you have no low end torque. And a 74 isn't a lightweight. If it was a track obnly car, 4.56s or 4.88s would take care of it, but with a street/strip car...
