the backfiring through the carb blew the power valve, the timing chain jumping the would cause the car not have any power/backfire through the carb the black fluid could be excessive gas ...what color was the smoke and holley has more adjustments or tuning ability than a edelbrock which is why the edlebrock is thought to be a better carb cause of its easy tuning ability

White smoke.

Yeah, the Holley is just a pain in the ***. I might sell mine and just pick up an Edelbrock. I just finished moving into a new house this weekend, so I'll prolly check the timing chain sometime this weekend. I'll keep you guys updated.

Alright, another update:

Tonight was timing chain check night. Everything looked solid under the timing chain cover. With the engine at TDC, both gears had the marker pointing straight up, so things seem okay there. The only other thing I can think of causing problems is that 750 Holley I had on the car, so I swapped that out. I bought a new power valve for the 600 that I stole the valve from in the first place, put it all back together, and threw that on top of my car. The only bummer is that my 750 was a dual feed on the right hand side whereas the 600 is a single feed on the left hand side of the car, so I have to wait until tomorrow until I can buy a longer fuel hose to reach the fuel feed on the new carb.

Oh, when I was draining the coolant in order to pop the water pump off I didn't notice a drop of oil in it, so I'm assuming my head gaskets are okay. Hopefully this carb swap'll do it.

And speaking of Holley carbs... the guy at the parts store offered to sell me a, "power valve protection kit." Anybody used one? They worth a damn?

Is this a daily driver street machine or is it a weekend car? If you're looking for reliability then Holley isn't your answer. In the past on my '68 327 RS I used the Edlebrock Performer with a 750cfm Q-Jet. I'm planning to do the same on my '67 327. Holley's are great if you have the know-how, time and patience to work with them. Q-Jet's are a breaze. Just set the air/fuel screws 1/4 turn past set, and adjust the timing. That's it! You're done.

Then you can spend your spare time driving your ride, rather than working on it.

Heh, well the purpose of this car was to drive on the weekends and sometimes during the week, but lately all it's done is sit in the garage. I'm going to build a new motor for this thing at some point, and I plan on doing an entire Edelbrock top end. I'm completely disappointed with Holley carbs at this point.

That's exactly what I did with my '68RS. It was a great daily driver and lasted up until I sold it to my little brother, who killed the 327. Lessons learned I guess.

Well guys, one Edelbrock carb and one set of plugs later... I have a working car. I'm currently running an Edelbrock carb of my buddy's that I borrowed, so my Edelbrock is on its way from Summit right now. Thanks for all the help!

Are you running the Edelbrock Q-Jet? Let me know how you like it. I'm trying to justify the higher price over a basic OEM replacement Q-Jet.

No, I'm running an Edelbrock Performer carb. I have to say, I like it a lot more than my Holley. I basically popped it on and it was good to go... very little tuning.

Hah, I wish!
