help!!
my car has been making a weird noise under the hood. kind of like a rattling sound (like a woodpecker lol). this sound gets louder as the rpms get higher. i brought it in to get looked at and the mechanic said i might need a new engine. or it could be the rods. but he didnt look at it, he just drove it in and heard the noise. he told me to call back tommorow and talk with the mechanic who looked at it to see what it was.
anyone have any idea what could be causing this noise? is it possible that an incorrect oil filter could have caused it?
also he told me that the fuse for my blower was out and replaced. forgive my ignorance but what is a blower and what does it do?
thanks to anyone who can help.

there are several things that could cause ticking noise that changes with rpm's crank bearing, piston slap, colapsed lifter or valve spring, bent pushrod loose rocker arm and worn timing chain very hard to diagnose online without hearing it first hand but wrong oil filter would only cause that if oil drained out and lost oil pressure---blower is blower motor for your heat
Most common cause for rattles/ticks is valvetrain. Pop off the valve covers and see if everything under there is ok. Loose rockers, busted valve spring, cracked valve guides, etc, can all cause noises.
I've heard a rod bearing that sounded like a rattle when it was begining to go. We were looking for a loose bracket or something till it eventually became more of the classic clack-clack sound of a rod bearing. Cost depends on how much work you do yourself and how much you pay to have done. Labor for work you have done depends a lot on your area.
If it is a rod bearing, added costs would come from having to replace any parts that have been damaged, like a rod or the crank if it's too far gone and can't be reground.
Which filter did you use?

i used the correct filter for a 74 camaro. however the engine in the car is from a 69 impala. so i was thinking it couldve been that.
as far as an engine rebuild, you thinking over or under a thousand dollars?

> 1k on the rebuild, especially if you farm out all the work. Check everything else that could be causing the noise before you go for a build. I've seen guys pull engines that ended up having simple problems like loose rockers or fuel pump drive eccentrics (Fords). What's your oil pressure like?
