help engine probs

i helpin a friend with a 355 in an elky heres most the detail bored .030 over,11.5 to 1 domed pistons milled heads with 1.94/1.5 valve dont know cc size and it has a comp cams 280h camthat is 230/230@.480/.480 we got the damn thing fired up but when you crack the throttle it spits spudders and dies restart adjust timing runs damn good turn off wont restart not sure on exact amount of gas but lets say 4 gallons of 87 and 93 mix from ammoco using a timin light cant get the timing mark past about 45* with out the motor dying and not restarting pulled the timing cover the crank at tdc and cam gettin ready to open exhaust valve dist is a little off but should be adjustable ...any ideas on what we missed as to the problem
