First gen questions for a soon to be owner

Hey guys im 18 and im planning on buying a 1st gen restoration project soon. I was just wondering what things about first gens you like and dislike, for instance are the seats comfy and can you see far enough over the hood, traction, handling, rust, cooling probs. I was also wondering 67'si know they have non-staggered shocks is there anyway that is fixable? Tanks guys for your help.

The seats are uncomfortable on long trips...your back will sweat if you don't have deluxe interior w/ houndstooth seats

The vison sucks...there's a huge blind spot behind you when your merging into traffic (where he quarter panel is behind the rear window). The chrome windsheild wipers will blind you when the suns over you.

Traction depends on how powerful of an engine you've got. Handling is the same across all planes of first gen's it's exactly like a 4000lbs steel bodied car with 35 year old technology should handle.

Is it worth all those headaches...one word HELL YEAH. I'll get more enjoyment and "looks" in my camaro than any rice rocket and overpriced luxury and sports cars. Along with the looks I'll also burn anyone's *** that tries it.

as with any car there aftermarket companies that have parts to change something you dont like say the handling or seats can all be cahged but the looks of a classic cant be replaced

They thing I like least is the fact that they rust. Other than that, I love everything about them.

You should go to college first...just my opinion

I had the chance at 18 to buy a 69 Camaro or go to college. I chose to go to college and kept on dreaming...one year after graduation I found her again and put her in my garage. Best choice I ever made.

Of course there is the rare person or two who have dropped out of H.S. and make more money than I do. Look at Jesse James.

later

Rutgers? If you're in NJ, there's not a lot of inexpensive first gen Camaros left in NJ. Take your time looking for a solid body and underside. If anyone tries to rush you into buying a first gen Camaro, then it's because it has some problems they are hiding. You'll be lucky if you can find a solid car under $7000 in todays market. Good luck.

yea i was figuring if i went out there with 8500 i might get a straight car, with an interior. There is a guy selling one down the street a 67, new motor, missing half the front end, no interior but a milk crate, cracked windshield dont know what kind of rust but he wanted 8000, i was like no way

Definitely go with the first gen!

Hellbilly69 is right, the seats plainly suck. They're flat, so when turning, you slide all over the place. My seats are pure vinyl and I live in florida. Combine that with no AC and it basically looks like I pissed my pants everytime I get out of the car. I've actually been thinking about lifting some seats out of a 3rd gen and bolting them in.

The handling generally does suck in the first gens, but with a little work they become better than some 4th gens. I have a full poly bushing kit in my '67 and some new springs, so now it actually corners better and stands up taller than my '96 Camaro. As far as the monoleafs in the back of the '67, just drop down $100-$200 on some ladder bars and call it a day. I have some Competition Engineering bars on my rear end and it hooks to the ground pretty damn good.

I can see fine over my hood, but I'm 6'2", so I kind of have a height advantage on my car. My car runs around 190-200 degrees most days, but like I said I'm in Florida, and I don't have a shroud over my fan.

Oh, and about the college thing. Do what I do, go to college and get the first gen. College girls like it when I come rumbling through the parking lot in my hot rod... at least in my mind they do

For $8500 you should do well. I actually passed on a 67 350/350 pw/pb plain Jane that needed paint and had very little rust for $4200 last October. (I had my heart set on an RS.) Be patient and take your time, the right deal will come to you.
