A couple of engine building Qs

Well, I'm basically done building the 350 I started on.

There are 2 things right now that are tripping me up.

The long style waterpump vs short style waterpump for one. I have a long style off a ZZ4 motor on the engine, but the pulley I got off ebay for it (said long style pulley) rubs against the crank pulley. Either the waterpump pulley is incorrect, or the crank pulley is incorrect. What is the easiest way to tell these apart?

What the hell are accessory holes? I have 1 large threaded hole in each cylinder head and I'm not sure what its for.

Is there a good source for specific bolts online? Bolts like bellhousing to engine bolts.

Also what is the best way to get my hands on a good carb for less than my right arm and 3 of my toes? If there is any way...

Well maybe more than 2 things...

Thanks,
Will

Will- the water pump pulley and crank pulley do come very close to eachother. If I had to guess, I'd say that the water pump pulley is too big. I can measure the diameter of my stock water pump pulley, if you email me. It's a long water pump application and is the original pulley set off the car, so I know it's properly matched. How is the alignment of the pulleys otherwise (do the belt grooves line up well?)

You are right to look for specific bolt sets when looking at accessories, trans bolts, etc. WHile there is nothing really special about them they are often a length that you can't find at the local hardware store. Tranny-to-engine bolts, however, I have used hardware store bolts on several occasions with no problems. Grade 5 will do fine- the dowels on the back of the engine block take most of the force, the bolts just keep the engine and tranny from separating lengthwise.

As for the bolt holes on the front of the heads- could you be more specific? Cylinder heads come with about 3 bolt holes drilled and tapped on the front on most small blocks, usually, and later heads came with 4. TYpically these are for mouting the alternator fulcrum bolt (pass side) and the power steering fulcrum stud (a special stud, not a bolt) and one of the the A/C compressor brackets on the diver's side.

I would say the waterpump pulley is an underdrivin one, they are larger so they turn the waterpump slower for more HP.
Some older pulleys were larger for the waterpump and smaller for the crank, i have a small crank and small waterpump so i have a lot of space between the two. I think i have a spare waterpump pulley laying around in the garage you could try.

as for the heads, accessory holes are the 3 holds in the front flat part of the head that faces the radiator, if you only have one hole then thats weird and you wouldnt be able to hook up tipical accessories, accessories are: power steering, alternator, air conditioning compressor, etc..

If the holes you speak of are on the side of the head between the exaust ports, then this is the hole you place your temperature sensor in, this leads into the waterjacket and is usually either 11/16" 5/8" or 1/2" in size and is a pipe thread.
There is one in each head.

Now if this one hold you speak of is on the back of the head facing the firewall, then this is for things like spark plug wire holders and wire loom holders. there will be only one 3/8" hole.

as far as bell housing bolts, man, the best thing you can do is to get a set from www.ARP.com
not sure if thats the site, may be www.arpfasteners.com
none the less im sure you will find it doing a search.

ARP makes GREAT fasteners and know the exact specs for your application. IMHO this is the ONLY way to buy bolts and studs!!!

Is the carb elec or manual choke?

If its elec, I'm interested.

Sorry for the long pause b/t posts, this is looking to be a long week at school.

Thanks, I might take you up on that. I'm going to have another look this weekend, when I head back to Monroe, and take some measurements.

Thats the ones I was unclearly referring to. So thread in the temp sesnor on one side and tap the other hole?

Thanks for the replies guys.

Yup, screw the temp sensor in one head (usually the drivers side is the closest to the sensor wire) and use some sealer of some kind to keep water from leaking out, ive used teflon tape with no ill effects.
The other hole you can go out and just buy an ordinary pipe plug that fits the size hole u have, seal it and screw it in there.

Goodluck man.

water pump pulley

Well, I've now had a chance to look at the engine.

The pulley is a little too big. It lines up too far back (away from the radiator) so the groves are not quite lined up. The measurement on the diameter is 7 1/8". Can anyone tell me with certainly which type of pulley this is?

Looks like there is a part # on here as well. 3932402 is the number.

Thanks again,
Will
