I've been a little unsure whether to go for an L79 cam or something a little hotter in my 327.

I came across this earlier today and it definately caught my eye. Supposedly they claim to have the sound of the original cam but improved power of modern cam design.

They claim:

They have Hydraulic "Nostalgia" versions of the 327/300hp, L79 & 30-30 cams along with a solid 30-30 variant.

The numbers of the ones I would consider are:

N+L79H :
Duration @ .050 : 229 int./236 exh.
Valve Lift : 0.468 int./0.462 exh.
Lobe Separation : 112
Claimed RPM range 1,800-6,200rpm

For comparison, stock L79 specs: 222 int. & exh. @ .050 / .447 Int. & Exh. lift with 114 Sep. 1800-5800rpm range

N+30-30H :
Duration @ .050 : 239 int./246 exh.
Valve Lift : 0.483 int./0.477 exh. lift
Lobe Separation : 112
Claimed RPM range 2,300-6,500rpm

Even though I listed it, I'm not too much on the N+30-30H being that it would probably be a dog down low with my 3.36 gears.

The N+L79H though looks to be just the ticket for me. I should still have the coolness of having an L79 sound (they claim), but with more duration & lift for a lot more power. I'm assuming from the tighter lobe seperation and identical lower rpm range that I won't take a hit in low end driveability/torque in relation to a "real" L79 cam.

I think I've decided on my cam . Any thoughts or suggestions? :bigears

If it matters my 66 Vette has a 327 muncie with 3.36 rear gears. I'll probably be using Trick Flow aluminum heads which will give me 10.3-10.4:1compression. If I decide to go with Dart Iron Eagles instead (not likely though), I'll be running approx 9.35:1.

Even the smaller cam is a little big for 3.36 gears, especially with a 327, IMO. I ran a 230 cam in a car w/350 & Muncie 2.54 1st/3.36s, it ran ok, but was better with a mid 220 cam.

Your car wouldn't be a hound, but you'd have to wait a bit till it got up on the cam. I'm not buying the claimed 1,800 rpm for the bottom of the band. A hyd cam w/230* isn't going to come on strong till it's crowding 4k, new tech or not. Would be killer w/4.11s.

I think something in the low/mid 220s would be a lot more fun to drive around town with your combination. The cam I run in my 400 would be my 1st choice: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Use 1.6 rockers, and since you're considering flat tappet cams, look into the zinc issue if you want to avoid rounded lobes with your new cam. Whatever you do, do not run the severely outdated L79 cam. It still has a rep, so some people use it. But I saw a heads up comparison vs. a HE 218* Comp cam in a mag. 218* cam made more low end, mid range, and about 25 hp more upstairs.
