chevy 305

I was wonder if the chevy 305 is a chevy 350 with a smaller crank? And different heads? Cause I found a good deal on one for 100 bucks running

305 has same stroke as 350, but a smaller bore. Heads have smaller chambers (58-59cc common) than 350 heads (76 or 64cc). 305 is a decent engine for a grocery getter, and can be built to make good hp, but a 350 is a better starting point.

My stock 305 in my 76 was rated 140@2800

I yanked that out immediately for a 350

In addition to that.....Many people try to put 305 heads on a bigger Smallblock to raise the compression. This WILL raise the compression But will reduce air flow due to smaller valves. Unless you NEED a running engine I would pass this deal up. The larger bore blocks are the way to go. Mike

actually the 305 (i'm assuming you want the Z/28 engine) is a 283 block with a 327 crank. you could aslo accomplish this goal by finding a small journal 327 and putting in a 283 crank.

ACTUALLY......

the 305 is not a 283/327 combo..... the 305 has a 3.740 x 3.48.
The 302 which was the 67-69 z motor was the same bore as a 327.. (4.00) and stroke of a 283...(3.00)

Just wanted to add that.

Wrong again.

307 was a 3.875" bore with a 3.25" stroke.

327 with a 283 crank is a 302.

Here's a page that lists SBC specs: http://www.dumpit.org/grimreaper/sbc-engspec.html

307 = 283 bore & 327 stroke
302 = 327 bore & 283 stroke
305 = unique bore & 350 stroke (had the smallest bore & longest stroke)
