burning Up Ignition Modules!
burning Up Ignition Modules!
alright I just built a 355 and put it in my car. Since It has been in(week and a half) I have burned up 2 ignition modules. Anyone have any ideas as towhat would be causing it? Any input would help.
Re: burning Up Ignition Modules!
What kind of ignition we talking about? 2 things that kill modules, and electronics in general, are heat and voltage spikes. Your alternator could have a shorted rectifier putting ac on your system, or a loose ground can cause surges in current draw. If it's an HEI, did you put plenty of heat sink compound on it?
Re: burning Up Ignition Modules!
If its a first gen and you have replaced the points distributor did you remove the resistance wire from the firewall fuse block? An HEI needs 12+ volts to operate.
If its a Mallory Unilite you're hosed. j/k - sorta.

Re: burning Up Ignition Modules!
Its the late style GM distributor with the small cap. It's an MSD stock replacement distributor and i've got an MSD blaster coil. I put plenty of heat compound on it and I'm pretty sure it's not the alternator but I'll check the AC voltage output and see what it's doin. It's just started happening since the motor swap and I'm not really sure what's causing it. The coil is really the only thing that puts any load on the module so I'm wondering if it's causing problems. All of the ground wires are connected.

1991 and should have 12 volts but i don't know for sure. The thing runs great but I'll just be drivin down the road and it will die and when I go to crank, no spark.
Re: burning Up Ignition Modules!
Well I talked to a GM Technician today and he said to try out another col because that one may be breaking down and shorting the module out. He said on that type of coil, alot of the time it an ohm meter won't tell whether it's goin out or not. I had a spare coil layin around so I threw it on there and I'm gonna drive it until it either craps or doesnt crap out. Thanks for the ideas guys.
